Cooking turkey upside down

I can see the logic behind this, in fact I've done it before with both chicken and turkey with good results. However on a channel 4 programme tonight, the turkey was slathered with a good quarter inch of butter all over the crown, and THEN turned upside down. Seems like a waste of butter, but maybe someone will explain the reasoning behind this?

This is my 40th christmas dinner Im doing . Used to always get a turkey and did it over night something I picked up off my mam lol. She/we put the turkey in about midnight on say 2 gas and leave it put a bit of tin foil over it. Get up in the morning to the smell of turkey take the foil off and turn up the gas.That way you know its cooked right though and no one is going to get food poisoning over the new year.

Now I buy a turkey crown much less waste with a crown. Mind you the only thing I miss is the wish bone. Ive never been one for getting all fancy like the butter...upside down..basting on the hour ever hour lol. Just put it in the oven couple of carrots and an onion in its rear end and there you go ...

As I understand it, the logic of cooking the turkey upside down is that the juices drip downwards into the breast meat, adding extra flavour to the bit of the bird that most of us in the West prefer (I regularly visit the Far East and the Chinese can't stand white meat in poultry, they think the brown meat is much tastier). I assume the butter will mix with the juices and help baste the meat at the bottom of the roasting tin?

Yes, you're correct. I used to cook my turkey upside down and it does make the turkey moist. But you are supposed to turn it the right way around for the last half hour or so, and I found that too difficult. Hot fat, heavy hot turkey trying to whip it over = disaster in my house.

That's exactly how I have been doing it for the last two or three years, lainey. Before that I used to get up at the crack of dawn on Christmas Day morning to put it on - madness!

I also wrap it in bacon which means it's moist, and this year I'll put it in a turkey bag. I do remember I used to turn it upside-down but like the previous poster, not sure I'd have the strength to turn it back the right way round at the end, plus it gets a bit flattened

I cooked it once upside down, it was far superior but as outlined above, turning it over was too much effort and a bit dangerous actually so I havent tried it since.

Why put yourself throught the stress of getting up at silly o clock to get the turkey in. Ive done mine today and the hams in the oven as well. I was going to shove it in tonight but thought sod it do it now then its done lol. Do what ever is easiest for you never mind the Olivers...and Bluthalls...and all the other clever clogs who "KNOW" how to cook a turkey lol. This way I can have a lie in in the morning lol... Got the sprouts in the pan and the cauliflower...and carrots. Im 60 lifes to short to be faffing about lol

I know this is a bit off topic but it still involves a turkey lol

Lost my dad 30 years ago but I still to this day cant think of a turkey with out thinking of him.

It was one of the first christmas I had being married. So him and mam came to mine I live in Liverpool and they are from Salford. So the turkeys done and its on the plate waitng to be carved. Now my husband wanted to carve and I said no let my dad do it...He wasnt happy but dad was bigger than him lol.. So dads got the carving knife and tried to carve the turkey that was sat quite happy on the plate shot off onto the floor lo... Well it was a fight to see who got to it first dad or the dog lol. So we stood there dad picked it up and put to back on the plate and carried on carving...and not a single one of us said a word lol

Well I'm cooking for 3 Goan refugees tomorrow, so I'm going to do the damn bird upside down and trust to one of them to help me turn it over, at which point they will want to sprinkle lots of spice over the breast, and that's fine by me. They profess to want to learn Western ways and food, but I'm not sure how bread sauce is going to go down!

Roasted Brussels with pancetta and chestnuts should be interesting but I know they'll love the roasted parsnips.

Hope your meal goes well, whatever, you're having.

Been cooking all poultry upside down for years and don't understand why it isn't the absolute norm by now.

You get lovely moist meat and you don't need to faff with basting all the time.

Well I'm cooking for 3 Goan refugees tomorrow, so I'm going to do the damn bird upside down and trust to one of them to help me turn it over, at which point they will want to sprinkle lots of spice over the breast, and that's fine by me. They profess to want to learn Western ways and food, but I'm not sure how bread sauce is going to go down!

Haha you cook exactly like I do!

We had it today and it was gorgeous - knife went through the meat like it was butter, and it tasted moist and delicious. I even had a lie-in before we went off to church and it all felt very relaxed
