Dust off your VHS

My sister was telling me today that VHS copies of Disney classics are making thousands online. I'm off up the attic tomorrow to see what I can root out. There is a warning though; it's only particular movies and particular editions of these movies. I'm always hoping I'll find out that something that's taking up cupboard space will turn out to be unexpectedly valuable.

I can just imagine the headlines now... after you break your neck trying to climb down from the attic.

I suspect it's very specific versions of them, usually in such cases it'll be something like a release that was either very limited in time for one country, or recalled.

IE a version that was only on sale for 3 months in East Germany with a store specific sleeve (or a coloured casing for the tape* rather than the normal black) will be worth more than a UK release that was available for a year at any retailer.

The same thing happens with DVD's and video games, there are a few game carts that are worth a fortune as they only ever made a couple of hundred copies (or even a dozen or less for competitions) and avid collectors will pay through the nose for them, but the standard releases are worth a lot less (or virtually nothing)

*Not the shelf package, but the actual casing that you inserted into the player.

Ive checked this out and its only specific copies. One in particular was a version of the Little Mermaid with a cover that was recalled because something in the picture on the sleeve looked rather phallic.

The larger format media are worth more (Posters etc) in this instance. I managed to bag a few, way back before it became infamous! The imagery was sort of in keeping with the subtext of the original story, but very 'odd' to have made it into a kids film and it's related materials...
Earliest editions of 'The Rescuers' have a nude silhouette in a window, a very brief moment that was removed from later editions. Don't think you'll be retiring on the proceeds from a sale though..
