Does anyone know how I check this for emails I have sent via Hotmail please?
I can see the option for incoming email 'How to respond to requests for read receipts'.
But how do I check if someone has read an email I have sent?

I was waiting for someone able to answer your question to post before adding my comment. I've always thought that asking for a read receipt is a bit rude - implying that you think the recipient can't be bothered to read their emails, or to reply to you when they have.

Just my take on it.

Read receipts are probably the 2nd most abused feature of the email standard. The 1st has got to go to the high priority flag.

It's a courtesy method to say that the email has been received and opened by the recipient. It's optional (and therefore some would argue useless) but in an ideal world - where people do not misuse communication or rely on / hide behind miscommunication - then it would be useful.

IME people refuse read receipts from people who send unnecessary messages or those that want to claim they never received messages. Usually to save their own incompetent behind.

Using email, if u get a ''failed to deliver'' notice, that means there was no ''receipt acknowledged'' message back from the destination. However, there's no way to show whether received emails have been read ......

"Failed to deliver" means the mailbox wasn't available. Read receipt is set at a level above that. You can assume it reached a mailbox - only errors on your part as the sender (wrong mailbox) or a misconfiguration / reconfiguration of the mailbox by admin or owner - redirected to alias, admin or owner mailbox rules (e.g. spamfilter).

You are right that there is no way to show whether received emails have been read as it depends on the recipient opening and acknowledging. Auto-read receipt is just a setting on the sender's (outgoing) client.
