Jazzfm has gone very dirgy of late. Ive got Nigel Williams on currently while waiting for Peter Young (always a great programme) and the musics non stop dirge. Jazzfm was great years ago with Mike Vitti, Greg Edwards, Robbie Vincent etc
And more recently theyve dropped the excellent Late Lounge programme.
Every time I tune in now its either adverts, or warbling dirge plinky-plonking

In my opinion ( others might love their current output) they need to get the jazzfunk back - and fast.

what do you mean by dirge? According to the web site they're playing Winter Wonderland by Booker T and the MGs - not a dirge though a bit slow for lunchtime..

Most of the songs today are Christmas tunes played in a vaguely jazzy arrangement: This Christmas by Donny Hathaway, which is a great song, Baby it's Cold Outside, In the Bleak Midwinter, Let it Snow! etc. There are a fair few non-seasonal songs in there too and I'm not a fan of some of them but generally I wouldn't use the word dirge to describe them.

Agree that the music is not a "dirge".

Mike Vitti and Greg Edwards are now on MiSoul, Robbie Vincent seems to be enjoying retirement with a blog about a recent visit to India.
Hopefully the late lounge will be taken by Chill or Chilled Magic where the music wil fit better.

I'm enjoying Jazz FM on a regular basis.

They are now playing real Jazz rather than cross-over stuff which pleases neither jazz fans or pop fans.

In 2016 they have championed acts such as Gregory Porter, Kamasi Washington, and Kandance Springs.

I like it but I am more of a Jazz fan than a soul or funk fan.

I no longer listen as I'm more of a soul & funk fan- this is no critisism of Jazz FM- they're playing jazz- and the jazz fans will be happy. I could never understand their playlist before- Frank Sinatra leading in to the Brand New Heavies for example- it pleased no-one. At least there's now some focus. I'm happy to listen to Mi-Soul, Solar or Starpoint these days or ven Magic Soul for the older stuff.

Quality station soulboy, been listening to it on internet radio for a couple of years now after reading a small review of it in the Times, It's got me learning the Francais speak (mmm, well trying). So varied but choice jazz styles.

Same here, I'm enjoying more of Jazz FM, more than I'd imagined I would, it's taken over from Radio 2 as my default background station.

I like Jazz and Soul and Funk, and for me Peter and Jeff Young (no, they're not brothers !) cover the latter two very well between them.

Glad I've found a fellow fan. It is a quality station!

I like their sister station, Radio Nova. It's a lot more eclectic than most of the UK specialist stations. I first discovered it on satellite many years ago and now listen online regularly - as apparently do several others in the UK, since their stream now seems to play UK advertising!

I haven't listened to Jazz FM since the Late Lounge ended. The rest of the programming was only ever marginally interesting to me, so after the cutbacks it stopped being worth the additional effort to tune in on DAB+.

I'm surprised the Late Lounge hasn't been picked up elsewhere yet - it seems like an obvious addition to one of the Magic spinoffs or Chill.

Jazz FM has some excellent shows, most of which are concentrated into the 48 hours of the weekend. I find the daytime Monday-Friday output far too bland. Voices on a stick who could be playing any music, anywhere.

I think that was a particularly unfortunate decision since it was a nice "wind down" show to listen to especially after a rubbish day.

I guess you could try Tunein for alternatives or take a look here.

I love listening to Jazz FM, it's 1 of my favourite stations and I don't regard the mixture of music played on it as a dirge. Long may Jazz FM continue !
