Bit of a shock, I hadn't seen anything about health issues

RIP Rick
He had a heart attack earlier this year and announced in October he'd no longer be touring by with Status Quo.

there was that time when the Quo were in the Cage on TISWAS, and Chris Tarrant had to chuck a bucket of water over Rick because he'd started smoking a joint

Goodness! Another one! I recall seeing them perform several times in a small hall back in the early seventies for next to nothing at the door. Good evening's entertainment.

There's no reason to suppose that there will be any fewer in 2017 and subsequent years. The year is not to blame. It is just that there is now a huge pool of public figures, many of whom have been around for decades and are now reaching the age when they die, just like the rest of us.
It'll be an end to 2016 deaths

Don't know if it was the case but according to the Mirror he picked up an infection in a hospital while holidaying in Spain.

I've been lucky enough to see a lot of great bands play live over the years, but the only time I can say the atmosphere was absolutely electric was when I saw Status Quo play their anthem "Rockin' All Over The World" at Glastonbury. So for that wonderful experience, 'thank you Rick and the rest of band'. May you RIP 😥

According to someone Sky News interviewed it was sepsis
Sounds likely

Status Quo's music is pretty shite, but 68 is no age these days. Hard living maybe.

Maybe I missed something, but if he picked up an infection in a Spanish hospital, how does that involve the NHS?
Unless you mean the Spanish Health System, Sistema Nacional de Salud.

I always think of Les Battersby when i think of staus quo
I've never forgotten his script departure from Corrie was to become a roadie for an Irish tribute band.
ZZ Top of the Morning.
