Christmas music in shops
Come into town for a few last minute things.
WH Smith is soulless with no music at all. Pub is playing Mr Brightside and Gary Barlow. Why do shops drive us bonkers with Christmas music at Halloween and now when you want to feel festive it's as Christmassy as a smack in the gob? |

The way i see it, there are three kinds of xmas song.
Theres the christmas pop song, of which im completely sick off. Then, theres the easy-listening Christmas song. I remeber when i was a kid, we had a cassette of easy-listening christmas music. Thats why i love easy listening music today. Then there are actual Christmas carols. Id wager those are the songs people dont hear much as an adult. They really make me nostalgic for my schooldays. In fact ive been meaning to download some. But id want then sung by a childrens choir..... |

There are certainly alot more than 3 kinds of Christmas song. What about other genres like Jazz, Folk, Blues, Country, Soul?

I went through my iTunes for everything Christmas-related in my library, took out the ones with swearing and put the rest on an iPod on shuffle to play at work. Everything from The Fall, Shonen Knife and The Ramones to Joni Mitchell and John Lennon. Plus a bunch of super-weird glitchcore Christmas songs which had even me thinking the stereo was knackered at one point. It was kind of awesome.

You'll be the lucky one. In every shop I've been in this week, its been one of Rockin around the Christmas tree, Mariah Carey or the Paul Mcartney one. Never the decent ones like Greg Lake or The Pretenders.

This doesn't bother me. I would rather hear any kind of Christmas song than the sound of people moaning and kids screaming.

I called in at Tescos around 3 and the staff were on stepladders taking the Christmas decorations down!

Did you know that Noddy Holder and Jim Lea of Slade get half a million quid a year for writing that awful tosh ?
Write a Xmas hit, or any hit single, that's the way to get a big, regular income. |

The solution: I switch on my Ipod, and put noise cancelling earphones on before I go into the shops. Then I don't have to listen to either the endless crappy Christmas songs, or the shop workers slowly going mad because they've nothing but them from the beginning of November!
