windows 10 wiped off hdd
Wondering if any one can advise me please.
A few days ago my pc wouldn't boot up, it kept coming up with a blue screen saying there was problem and it tried to repair, the repair failed twice, then it gave me the option of reinstalling windows and leaving my files, upon doing that, on first load it came up with the failed to load message again, then said it was undoing the changes. When It failed to load again, I told it to reinstall and wipe everything, it took over an hour, and when it rebooted it said "no operating system found". Ive been Tinto the bios to make sure its set to had first for booting, but it still days no os found. The pc was a win7 pc which has the serial key stuck under the pc (its barely readable), and I upgraded it to win 10 for free last year, I have no backups or anything. Can someone advise what my best options are please? Would win 10 "remember" I was a legit user if I downloaded and installed from fresh? Or would I be better just running a version of Linux (I've never tried it, but only really use the pc for internet) Thanks for any help |

It should reactivate no problem. However are you sure your HDD isn't failing? As you're going to do a fresh install, maybe best to install a new HDD first?

![]() I suppose the hdd could be failing, but have bad zero problems with it until now, so dunno. So to be clear, should I download win10 from Microsoft, burn it to cd, and it should just "work"? Could I install it from USB stick rather than messing with cd's? Thanks again. |

Given it was a win 7 pc the hard drive is probably getting to end of life as a general guess. New CMOS battery which costs not a lot as well might not be a bad thing generally a CR2032 battery which you can buy from supermarkets/maplins etc.
Probably the main thing would be to get someone to give it a once over who knows what they're talking about. Its probably a cheap fix, small 500gb drive and the effort of burning a DVD or sorting out a £5 usb stick and you'll be back but your old data could be well gone so thats why we recommend backups. |

We did a reinstall.... and installed the wrong version
.I installed pro instead of home, but a least it recognises I have a serial for win 10 home, so I will need to re install it again at some point in the new year, but for the moment its working. Thanks |

See if you have c:\windows.old if there is anything important you want to keep. Back it up somehwere else if so.
windows.old will be overwritten when you go for W10 Home. Nothing has failed unless it is proved to be failed. Guessing at batteries and HDDs is pointless. Especially if a re-install appears fine. |
