Sounds like you're seeing 800Mhz but your phone isn't allowed on it, I don't think even installing Three In Touch allows it on that device? Three currently only lets certain handsets onto 800Mhz.

Ive tried the in touch app, which apparently lets me connect if there's no usable signal but it wont let me activate it unless i can first connect to their mobile network, there is no 3G available in this location, and i cant connect to the 4G signal ( also tried n an iphoe and a moto G4 play) so I cant activate the in touch app which is supposed to let you connect if there is no network.

can you spot the flaw in that?

Not really as you only activate it once when on the network and from then onwards you never have to do it again. If you had no signal at home then I wouldn't have chosen that network in the first place. If it didn't activate by connecting to the network and validating the sim was in the phone and validating the device then there would be potential security flaws allowing somebody to active something which isn't your phone without the SIM card in their possession.

It is a really, really minor thing that the one time only activation has to be on the network for you then to be set up to use 800Mhz whenever you hit a poorer 4G 1800 and 3G signal area.

I had the re-activation issue loads of times when I was with 3... it always seemed to happen as you say when you need the app as there is no signal so you can't re-register!

It might have to reactivate after update or once every so often.

So if it has to re-activate every once in a while....
Whilst i have he app installed, its usually not running all the time as most places that i go to have coverage, it just seems like some cack-handed half baked app.

As for the 4g 800mhz, if your phone supports it, you should be able to use it.

Many people have said that.

That isn't going to happen until Android sort their s**t out...

Unless Google can convince manufacturers to work together, rather than develop their own IMS stacks, I fear we're stuck with this problem for a while yet.

The upside is that EE and others will require all phones to support VoLTE from now on, so I'd hope common sense means the settings will be on all builds - not just operator supplied builds.

At least this time next year the problem should be history.

This time last year I thought this time this year I’d be a millionaire.

You can call me sceptical, but do mean a Jupiter year?

Well, EE is requiring all handsets released in 2017 to have VoLTE support. I assume the others are too.

So in a year from now, it really shouldn't be much a problem. Every new HTC, Huawei, LG, Sony, Samsung, Motorola, Google phone...

It may leave some Chinese made phones, but even they're likely to want to stand a chance of being ranged by a network. And VoLTE is a requirement throughout the world.

So I think the problem will, finally, solve itself this coming year.

That explains why there have been some good deals on brand new iPhone 5s handsets just before Christmas, from places such as TalkMobile. Obviously wanting to clear non-VoLTE handsets in stock.

The problem is that the pace of change has slowed dramatically, people I know are very happy with iPhone 5s or Galaxy S3/S4 era handsets, may even keep them another year. Especially as contract phone prices (e.g. EE on iPhone 7) seem to be going up very fast.

Network operators may have to think about incentives to get people to replace non VoLTE devices.
