For several months I have synced my iPhone 6s (now with IOS10.2, but for several weeks) to a silver laptop running Mac OS10.8.5, iTunes version 12.4.3.1. Suddenly, it will no longer sync and I get a message saying the iPhone needs a newer version of iTunes. Trouble is when I click update I’m told I have the latest version (presumably for 10.8.5. I think there is a later version but Mountain Lion isn’t modern enough. Could that be why it will no longer sync. I repeat, I have successfully synced it for the past three months.

Would this operating system/iTunes compatibility list be of initial help since the iTunes version is not mentioned? https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-8871

I suppose all I can do is upgrade my OS so that my machine can run the latest iTunes version.

Well, I did upgrade my OS and installed the latest version of iTunes, but my machine, and early 2007 silver Macbook isn't particularly happy with Yosemite (not the latest OS, I know. The reason I held off was that once before I upgraded (to Marvericks) and it was all a bit sluggish. But at least In can sync my iPhone again.

It would seem that if you are on iOS 10 then you will need iTunes 12.5 on a Mac.

My friend had exactly this problem after she updated her iPhone's Operating System. I had to install "El Capitan" for her. (It's not the latest but late enough to run the latest iTunes.)

As your "silver laptop" description is so vague, I have no idea whether it's capable of running a later MacOS. Generally, it's not colour dependent!

The 'silver laptop' is a 15in Macbook Pro early 2008. I have upgraded, though only to Yosemite, and my fears were groundless. Isn't at all slower, though it always took a while to boot up, and I have now been able to update iTunes to the latest and sync my phone. The reason I was cautious was that a few years ago, I upgraded to the then latest, Mavericks, and my machine really didn't seem to like it, so I just time machine to go back to the old settings. But that I persuaded me that the laptop was to slow and underpowered to take a more recent OS. Happily it isn't, so everything now fine.

PS I did have a similar problem with a the white 13in Macbook I am writing this on. It is an old 32-bit model which will only take up to Snow Leopard (10.6.8, I think), so when i got my new iPhone 6s which came with IOS 9, I couldn't use that for iTunes and that is when I switched to the silver one for my music library.
