I'd actually forgot about that - so much has gone on and I tend to remember the things no-one can remember like Vicky and her Meningitis - Tom the Pot Collector dying - and Strokes Wine Bar replacing Henry's

I remember Tom when he was working as the pot man, too. Was Strokes the bar Den's mob cronies worked out of when he was supposed to be involved with them? I remember the Dagmar too. All these walks down memory lane, it's great.

Yes Strokes was The Firm's place ran by Joanne played by Pamela Salem (I think we only saw Henry's a couple of times - but Den mentioned it a bit as a rival to the Vic - was under the Arches where Elysium is now - was also Pizza Margarita (where Steve worked) and the Snooker Hall too)

Tom's death is one of the first things I can clearly remember - although I do remember vaguely Hassan's death and Dr Singh's departure (I remember when Dr Singh left at New Year my Uncle convinced me Lift was going to get electrocuted at The Vic after getting his hand stuck in the till)

I think DTC forced the show's hand on this - they couldn't just explode the Mark secret and leave it as they did - it'd waste the timebomb it had become. Surely if Phil is on his deathbed then Grant is the next step.

Hassan's death was one of the most moving and tragic storylines I have ever seen on EastEnders - mostly because of Sue Osman's (sandy Ratcliff's) reaction to the death of her son - I think her telephone call (in a red phone box - no mobiles in those days) trying to cancel her child benefit because she was no longer entitled to it was one of those scenes which are fairly low key but incredibly upsetting and stay with you forever

So having watched from the very first episode while it is too early to make a judgement I am quite pleased they have finally recast Michelle - many many viewers will not have seen her played by Sue Tully, the physical resemblance is about as near as you could get (having the new Michelle appear as a flashy busty blonde would not have worked!) so yes I would say so far so good

Looking forward to seeing Michelle and possibly her Family back on the Square.

I wonder if Michelle will buy No.27?

I dont think Spencer will be back but Mark Jnr & Vicky definitely.

Merry Xmas all.

Wouldn't mark jnr be a bit young for Whitney .

In relation to Michelle not sure , we don't even know if she is permanent .

The actress herself with the mixed accent although she was born in Paddington she grew up in Dundee so I suppose I should be nice about her

And that is exactly what everyone should do, no point in whining about the previous actor in the part as that is in the past and best left there.

We know someone out an offer in last week so could be Michelle but I'd rather her by 43 - next to her family home and she once lived there with Vicky and Sharon - it has been undergoing renovations so could be going on the market

Exactly hopefully this starts a new era for The Fowlers.

I've watched EE from the very beginning and I dont have a problem with them recasting Michelle. Yes Susan Tully made the role her own and was very iconic as Michelle but lets remember she's been gone now for 21 years. Michelle left the show a 26 year old girl and has now returned a 47 year old woman. She was bound to look different anyway given the length of time since we last saw her. Recasting doesn't take away or taint Tully's portrayal of the character in anyway. Just think of Tully's character as a young Michelle and Russell's character as older Michelle.

Susan Tully has made it clear she will never return so what were they meant to do? Leave Michelle off screen forever never visiting the place she spent the best part of her life despite all her closest friends and family living there? That didn't work as we've seen, her continued absence has been very unrealistic for years.

I say give the new actress a chance and lets think of her as Michelle - simply an older version of Sue Tully. She's an interesting character to see return Michelle was quite unique in her personality compared to most of the ladies - feisty and headstrong but also very rational, shrewd and intelligent.

Recasting the role is acceptable after twenty years but my question is much more about the character's motivation for returning. Although I only started to watch Eastenders in 1993 towards the end of Michelle's time on the Square, I remember her as someone who was always trying to improve, to get better and to get out.

Apart Melanie Healy (and possibly Lisa Fowler), Michelle was one of the few characters who managed to build a life away from Albert Square. She studied while working and bringing up a child, got a job teaching at a university in Florida (in the real world now almost impossible due to visa requirements) and has been married for twenty years. Why give all that up and come back to rainy, blighted Walford ??

They had the same problem in the Aussie soap, "Home And Away", with Alf Stewart's daughter, Roo.

She appeared in the show for the first year or so, but then left & was never seen again, as the actress who played her, Justine Clarke, never wanted to return. She missed key family events, such as when her stepmother, Ailsa died in 2001 or when Alf had some health problems over the years.

They tried asking her back several times over the years, but the final straw was in 2008, when she didn't return for the 20th anniversary of the show & many other former cast members did.

So in 2010, they finally recasted the character with a new actress & most fans of the show that I know have got used to the new 'Roo'.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roo_Stewart

So, with the new Michelle in "Eastenders", lets give Jenna Russell a chance & see how she gets on over the next few episodes etc. She is a also singer & sang the theme tune to the comedy series, "Red Dwarf". I thought I recognised the name from somewhere!...

I don't blaming them for recasting, as Sue Tully won't come back then it's fair enough. I hope they do the same with Zoe Slater, as Michelle Ryan has made it clear she dosen't want to return either, so they should recast her too!...

Some recasts work out in the end, as like many, I was a bit sceptical about James Bye as Martin in the early days, but now I think he's good in the role & I've totally forgotten about the other guy who played him all those years ago. Same goes for Ben too & I preferred Kim Medcalf as Sam, rather than Daniella Westbrook.

No problem with the recast and it's great to have more Fowlers on the square. My only concern is ensuring she does still have that spirit and intelligence and she doesn't end up just working in the cafe!

Thanks for that DJ that is a perfect example on how things can work out in the end - Loved original Roo but NuRoo made the role her own and did fit in as Alf's daughter - was trying to think of an example like this yesterday but couldn't - and as with Jenna Georgie was a consummate actor who had the chops to pull it off.

Rumour has it (and by that I mean I read a post on here )
Spoiler
is that she slept with a pupil which ruined her marriage and career - a bit of a role reversla from the Geoff/Michelle storyline form way back

I think she will be good. It's going to be nice to see the Fowlers/Beatles being built up again.

Merry Christmas folks

Understand the recast seeing as Susan Tulley has said no repeatedly to a return so they had to recast. As for Newchelle then I will wait before making a judgement. That being said it is good that that rebuilding one of the original main families (Beales and Fowlers) and I wonder what the EE Team have in line for Chelle

I do like how they are rebuilding them but i think they need to focus on the younger generation, we really only have Bex to continue the Beale/Fowler line (I'm sure Louie will end up being a Branning after Lauren splits up with Steven). DTC's biggest f*** up was to make Arthur Kush's son rather than Martins

I'm old enough to remember the days of Susan Tully as Michelle Fowler (before she left) and given Susan has no desire to return to Walford I'm willing to give nuMichelle a go.
