Hi mate, this is Phil. It was Emma's Idea to put that on the card. I'd delete this message before she sees it, she's not in the best of moods this morning. Too much Gin last night

The idea that Christmas is only Christmas if you have a massive family, a huge dinner and a ton of presents. It's as if no other way is acceptable.

Since my mom died, I've spent many Christmas Days on my own, still cooked a full dinner though as I love roast dinners. Today I've been invited to spend it with some friends and I decided to go. It does annoy me though when people think you can't enjoy a day alone. I quite enjoy the peace and doing what I like really.

Goes on too long (in advance of the day). Annoying relatives, the feeling I'm getting older and older. Awful food (I can't stand mince pies and Christmas pudding). Boredom. Awful TV. The fact everything is disrupted by the celebrations. Haven't been to gym this week etc. Me moaning .... etc

Hate those 'round robin' letters, bragging what they've achieved through the year.

Being alone and bored to death. People complaining about relatives/family should realise how lucky they are.

Shops starting to sell Christmas things earlier than Halloween things.
Hearing Christmas songs earlier than 1st December. The fact that some retail staff are expected to work at 6am on Boxing Day. |

The TV scheduling is so unimaginative on the whole.
The highlight of Christmas is an hour long version of a soap opera that we all watch virtually every single day of the year, or a festive version of a celebrity dance programme or a programe about people baking that has just finished its run. It would be nice if the schedulers could come up with something a bit different for Christmas Day itself. |

It's the long build up to it - tv / online / shops adverts etc., feel overloaded by the time the day arrives.

It's the stress. As a country we've pretty much forgotten what the true meaning of Christmas really is; so okay, it's now just an excuse for a bit of a knees-up and some gifting. Fine. But is it the end of the world if this or that doesn't go right? No! And for God''s sake stop asking if I want something. You're not my servant. Relax and enjoy yourself.

The three-month build up -- for what - just one day. Is this three month build-up really necessary? This build-up is just something that has recently been adopted a few years back nothing much happened before December 1st.
Soon after Christmas we will see Easter items like Easter eggs in the shops, again why? |

Something that really annoys me is the falseness. How much goodwill do people give the other 364 days of the year? I admit I'm a grumpy bastard but at least I'm consistent and not false. I didn't see much good will yesterday in Tescos, it was like every man woman and child for themselves.

Man proposes, God disposes. I've made the acquaintance of 3 Goan refugees. They work all hours God sends and all 3 of them live in one small room, their only means of cooking are a hot plate and a microwave. Result, I cooked for 4 instead of indulging myself. We all had a cracking time, they all helped out after they'd gone to Mass and I even found a Bollywood film for them to watch. Next year? Next year is for me. Closing the curtains, no-one home, 'phone turned off. Can't wait! |

This is why if anyone asks what I am doing for Christmas, I always say I have a friend coming from London. I have told this little white lie for the past 28 years so that I can spend Christmas just how I like it, on my own, with my feet up in front of the TV watching what I like, and eating when I want to, it is sheer heaven.
![]() .Everybody is brain-washed through the media, commercial adverts, etc. to think that nobody should be alone on Christmas Day. What about all the other 364 days of the year? As you said in your other post, Walter. Loneliness is a state of mind, you can be alone without being lonely, and you can feel very lonely if you are with a load of relatives who you have nothing in common with. |

I've hosted christmas for 46 bloody years, for the past 30 doing EVERYTHING on my own - then my son comes up to visit, sleeps until 3 pm while I creep around quietly cooking. This year I persuaded him that what with Southern trains and all, he might prefer to stay home, make merry with his friends etc. Bliss.

Buying presents. The sheer stress of buying things at an appropriate price that aren't rubbish.
Then getting it all wrong. |
