Loneliness is a state of mind, you can be alone without being lonely, and you can feel very lonely if you are with a load of relatives who you have nothing on common with. I speak from experience, and I know what I prefer.
There is a huge difference between being alone by choice and being alone because you just don't have anyone. The former can be great if that's what you really want but when the latter is forced upon you time after time, it can take its toll and no state of mind offers an easy fix.

Sadly it's the latter for me and this time of the year just makes it feels even worse.

This is why if anyone asks what I am doing for Christmas, I always say I have a friend coming from London. I have told this little white lie for the past 28 years so that I can spend Christmas just how I like it, on my own, with my feet up in front of the TV watching what I like, and eating when I want to, it is sheer heaven.
I've done the same this year and it's been great. I love Christmas on my own. I find when I am on my own I eat less, spend less yet have more fun.

I am going to have to invent my own 'little white lie' for future use. I also now feel the same about New Year. I like having that on my own. Tend to play computer games, avoid television and let midnight slip quietly by.

I'm in the exact same boat there. Yesterday was just another day but I've learned to avoid all those nonsense adverts that push the idea of the only Christmas is a big family one. I took the dogs out, cooked a light dinner and spent the evening watching old films on Netflix. You're right in that this time of year can make loneliness feel even worse but the way I see it, once past the big day, it gets a lot easier as life slowly returns back to normal.

Having to go to work the next day, one good thing about Xmas on a Sunday is we get Monday as a holiday too but usually Xmas Day comes to an end at 10pm when we start to get ready for work the next day

Shops full of amateur shoppers, pubs full of amateur drinkers. A pox in it all.
