Point proven - dafter each post.
"In my opinion" of course - which means I'm right and you're wrong in the world of Achtung.
Wasn't Banarama a current affairs program?

There's about 50 in the London Philharmonic and they still can't manage to write their own songs.

The superiority complex of Beatles fans knows no bounds. Get down off your high horse and stop insulting people who don't agree with your point of view about The Beatles by calling their opinions "daft". If I find them mediocre, that's my opinion, if you love them, that's up to you. If I preferred a song by Pepsie & Shirley, I'd buy that rather than a Beatles record, some people aren't snobbish/elitist about music.

Really? I thought that "In my opinion" means your mileage may vary or WTTE. Not everybody likes The Beatles.

You're just the kind of feller who thinks Mozart is better than Beethoven

I'd never go in a pub with a load of Beatles fans, I'd be garrotted, even though I don't mind them.

Well obviously! You also have a more accurate view of it that merely relying on occasional film clips, books and Wikipedia. What you conveniently overlook is that those of us who lived through it... and what went before (the 1950s) have also lived through and experienced everything else since then. So we can readily compare and contrast the effects on popular culture of the various phenomena of the time.

Tell that to John Lennon.

They were this side of the pond, but only for the time they stayed together. Queen and Freddy Mercury became bigger than the Beatles, and there's no one to beat Queen. Same could be said re the Beach Boys.

You don't really want me to edit in to my post the words "who are still alive" do you? Sad loss though he was, of course.

How on earth can lyrics be fickle? Some were deliberately trite or obtuse as a way of taking the piss out of pretentious journalists who were constantly trying to attach their own interpretations to them. I remember being very confused by the non-lyrics when Hello Goodbye first came out, but now I simply see it as an incredibly joyous song which never fails to give me a lift.

As has previously been mentioned by others, unless you were lucky enough to live through that period it is absolutely impossible to imagine the scale of their dominance over just about every walk of life. It was just staggering and will almost certainly never be equalled.

He was a very sad loss, and was greatest of all of the Beatles, and was to me. Heard Julian singing one time and he sounded so like his dad. Another sad thing is the type of singers XF gets as none of them sound like John Lennon, whose voice quality wasn't a shouting one.

It was lucky that they sold vast volumes at the time which was down to good promotion/propaganda, not much competition and just sheer luck. If he were still around, ask John Lennon and he'd probably say the same thing. I know Beatle's obsessives don't like to see things from any other angle and that's fine. This is just my opinion, keep living in your bubble if that's what makes you happy. ”

They probably are as far a pop singles go but has Kylie, Sinitta and Bananarama ever brought out an album to match Sgt Pepper's for example?

Did any of those write their own material btw, successful material that is.?

I bet they were bigger in the US than Queen and who says Queen were bigger here anyway?

Maybe for teens, but not for adults!

Brian Wilson was driven by Lennon/McCartney.
They transformed his music when he realised the Beach Boys were becoming cliched surfies.
As great as they were at what they did they stepped up to a higher level.

I know they went to the US, not that I was ever there ye ken. I can only talk about this side of the pond, and once they split up, going their separate ways, other bands/groups became more noticeable and the Stones was one of them, then came Queen and Freddy Mercury and he took the world by storm. I was in that era you know, so do remember what it was like, and more excitement than XF have ever mustered!

Some of the Beatles songs weren't that great, but what they had was sound, and how they looked, which got the teens worked up into fainting fits! All they had to do was open their gobs and the whole audience, erupted into mayhem!

That's as may be, but I liked the style of the Beach Boys and some of their songs, and one I still like today. The idea of their surfing in CA went a long way from weather where one lived, seeing nice sunny days is very welcome.

I think they will be put in perspective - they did copy from other groups. But I don't expect to see another band as phenomenal or as creative in my lifetime. There is such a wealth of music to be re-discovered - I watched Pointless recently and hardly anyone knows anything on the White Album anymore.
