Maybe so, but the Hollies were excellent.

I agree. A great pop band, but not in the same league as The Beatles, and they wouldn't pretend they were.
heres their version of harrisons composition 'if i needed someone' a minor hit but imho should have been top 5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmwhsgjOmpc |

Without a doubt. Everyone grows up with The Beatles.
They are undoubtedly the biggest selling band but popular isn't always best and sales of music has changed. |

And as time passed Harrison reached their level in terms of quality, if not quantity. Remarkable for one group to have three songwriters of that calibre.
Also worth mentioning Traveling Wilbury's where i always felt George found a true 'soulmate' with Jeff Lynne. Both real gentlemen and 'Mr Nice Guys'. |

The Beatles were,in my opinion,a very mediocre group that got lucky in meeting the genius who was Gerge Martin.
You have only got to watch their appaling 'live' performances (song and instrumental) and then compare them with their studio ones to see that without George Martin they were nothing special! There were far,far better groups around at the time-The superb Hollies spring to mind. They were as good live as in the studio and infinitely superior singers and musicians. ABBA were and still are the best group the world has seen! The sheer beauty and astounding vocals of Agnetha and Anni-Frid will never be bettered plus the sheer bloody genius of Bjorn and Benny. The group set standards that will never be surpassed by any one else. As I said-the Beatles got lucky but it was not talent that made them so famous! Quote:
I think the members of The Hollies would be extremely embarrassed if they read this.

No they don't . They split up in the 70s. Lots of young people barely know them.
They are undoubtedly the biggest selling band but popular isn't always best and sales of music has changed. http://www.uk-charts.top-source.info/1960-to-1969.shtml Nowadays, with so many accomplished bands and so many innovative musicians across a multitude of genres they would probably not have been anywhere near so popular. They were a success of the time... |

When you look at what they were up against as the best selling singles of the 1960s then you can see why they has such an impact.

They sold over 100Million records in the US alone. It was often said that when the Beatles looked over their shoulder it wasn’t the Rolling Stones they saw,…it was the Dave Clark 5; …it’s strange that they are virtually forgotten and rarely get mentioned these days. ![]() P.S. they were, by all accounts, superb ‘live’ as well;…something not often said about the Beatles.

I would dispute that you had to be there to appreciate how huge The Beatles were back in the 60s. I wasn't born until 1967 but I am interested in music of that era so I have watched documentaries and read books on music from the late 1950s onwards.
Whereas I respect that other people may prefer music from the likes of Abba and Queen, there is no comparison with regards to the influence those bands had on the music scene to the influence The Beatles had and that they were very talented musicians and songwriters. 50 years on there is still a huge interest in them with people visiting Liverpool from all over the world to take the "Magical Mystery Tour" and visit The Beatles museum, The Cavern, their childhood homes, Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane. I can't think of anyone else other than Elvis who has that kind of draw. That's one of the reasons why The Beatles remain the biggest band in the history of music - because of the influence they had on so many other bands who made a big mark in the history of music. They started it all, they touched others to carry it on. They influenced, they inspired. |

Just taking one post out of the many I've read that mention other groups such as Abba, Queen and of course others. I doubt there is one member of those groups (who wrote the songs/music and probably even those who didn't) that would deny the influence the Beatles had on them.

The ‘Dave Clark Five’ made a record-breaking 18 appearances on the American “Ed Sullivan Show,” with its weekly audience of 70 million viewers — more than any other rock, pop or R&B artist….and that includes the Beatles.

The Beatles were said to be superb live before they were famous, but once they were, they were unable to perform properly due to crowd noise, and poor sound systems of the day. The DC5 cannot be compared to the likes of The Beatles, The Stones and Led Zeppelin. They were an out and out pop group. |

I think John Lennon would have given up songwriting and got a job in accountancy, how could he compete with Ed Sheeran ?

The DC5 were another good pop group, and they got the business side right. If The Beatles had wanted to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show every week, they could have, but they moved on remarkably quickly with what they were doing, whereas group[s like The Hollies, and the DC5 stuck with what worked, and there really wasn't anywhere else for them to go.

Who's the best is entirely a matter of personal opinion and is something you can't really measure - though even after half a Century, The Beatles still seem to do well in major music polls that try to measure it. |

This isn't about who has the highest sales or who is the best. It's about who had the biggest impact, and the biggest influence on music, popular culture, and other musicians of their time and subsequently. High sales is of course part of it but only a part.

Who's the best is entirely a matter of personal opinion and is something you can't really measure. It may well be that not every young person on the street has even heard of The Beatles or - if they have - understands how big their influence has been on the music they hear today, but most of the musicians the yoof of today listen to have and do.** A quick Google search was made to see who he states are his influences. |

Just curious, but how would you categorize the Beatles music?
![]() …possibly early R&B, then POP, then psychedelia/Rock& Roll ‽ They undoubtedly made memorable songs, but lots of shite as well;….however, they weren’t alone in that respect. ![]() P.S….Quote from ‘pop star’ Ozzy Osbourne: “I wanted to be a member of Dave Clark Five. I remember being at the school dance and ‘Glad All Over’ came on, and every time they went “And I’m feeling..” BOOM BOOM… It sent chills up my spine.” ![]() Much of that was to do with having two great songwriters from the start, who pushed each other ever forward, and then getting a third great songwriter. Having that gives incredible variety, which few others had. The Moody Blues and Queen had similar, but not many. The Beatles were only together during their fame for 7-8 years, and when you see the progress from Please Please Me to Abbey Road, or even Rubber Soul, it is astonishing. They never stood still, and others followed what they were doing. As for shite, that is due to opinion, but for me, The Beatles music was almost all good to great, with a few exceptions, but much of it should be seen from the time it was released. The DC5 was the complete opposite for me. A few very good pop songs, with loads of filler. As for Ozzy, I've seen many interviews with him where he names The Beatles as the major influence on his life. |
