I've heard various theories:

- She will name it Ethel
- It is the reincarnation of Jim
- It will kill her Xmas/Boxing/New Years Day

I'm wondering if they could all be right -

The cat is INDEED the reincarnation of her dear departed Jim. As she grows closer to the cat she names him after her long time friend Ethel. EthelJim take umbridge to being given a girl's name and trips her up at the top of the stairs. She falls down and breaks her neck. She gets up and sees Nick with nad help out. "'Ello Ma', Come with me we've been waiting." Nick and Dot walk towards the light and Charlie's shillouette. Everyone is guilty for not visiting her Christmas Eve at the Laundrette. EthelJim crosses Abi's path and she takes him in - little realising she is torturing her dead Grandad.

Bad luck if it runs away from you, good luck if it comes towards you. This cat definitely came towards Dot so, in my view, it's a symbol of good luck.

More importantly, is it the same cat that was seen scavenging in Carmel's bin?
