To all those who profess to no feelings about the Queens illness-if a work colleague said thier Grandmother, who you'd never met, was too ill to go to Church, would tell them you didn't give a f**k about her? It's still a 90 year old woman, and I hope she recovers, just as I hope EVERBODY who is ill has a speedy recovery.

What happens to all the sycophants who drive miles to see her every year? Can they claim their petrol back?

Whatever people all say and joke about, she has done well over the years and is now 90 years old. It will be very strange for nearly all of us when she passes away and we have a king instead. You would have to be in your seventies to remember her father being king now and even then you would only have been a child. It sounds odd to think of people singing God Save The King etc.

One of the longest serving Heads of State of a major nation ever and it would be difficult to remember anything significant she has ever said or done. The monarchy will long endure if her successors learn the same tricks. |

She has indeed. She has kept her head down and been very astute in safeguarding the income and capital assets of her family.

The one thing most people might remember is the initial reaction to Diana's death. But she managed to save the situation just in time, and ultimately came out of it stronger.

They should have a stand-in queen lookalike for emergencies such as this.

Yeah, surely Helen Mirren's available as a stand-in. Or if not, maybe some sort of inflatable emergency queen?

In Italy, I think, for Christmas (watched Graham Norton in case you think I'm a stalker).
![]() ![]() They should definitely have used an inflatable then, like the automatic pilot demonstrated here.

I can understand some people don't want Royalty but when push comes to shove I would rather someone who has been trained for many years to do the job of head of state than have a president Blair/Johnson/Milliband/Corbyn or any of the other politicians.
The Queen, while I might not agree with the wealth, yet there are many who have much more wealth and influence in some cases, has been a huge asset to this country, she's an incredible ambassador who does her homework when meeting other representatives and heads of state. |

I'm not a Royalist by any means but I wouldn't wish any harm on two old people. Just noticed a pic of Phillip and the poor bugger doesn't look at well.

If she is a an effective ambassador perhaps you can identify something specific her diplomatic skills have achieved? |

Although it was arguably Blair's political instinct and advice that saved the Queen from blundering over her response to Diana's death.

Myabe being diplomatic as a royal representative means she keeps things on an even keel, she doesn't personally have to have achieved a trade deal or a cease fire. She's well known for making people feel like they count, she's non political so maybe has a bit more leaway with other heads of state, she makes sure she's well versed on everyone she meets according to the Commonwealth heads of state and others, maybe I should say and excellent host and guest perhaps if you don't like ambassador. Obviously I am not in the diplomatic service so you may choose to disregard what I say but a bit of research may justify my humble opinion. She's someone who understands duty and sacrifice, (not monitery of course but personal) unlike so many these days, it seems to be a dirty word and 'I want/must have ' is the current mantra.
If she has just been an effective host for the last 60 plus years then she has frankly been very well paid for that job in monetary terms and for some 40 of those years she negotiated tax exemption for herself. During years in which I and most of her subjects paid tax willingly and at a high level. So I do not accept the self-sacrifice argument. Sorry I just see an ordinary person who has done a very well paid job; which she inherited; looked out for herself: and has lived a long time. |
