The Royal broadcast begun in 1932
The Queens first one was 1952

First pre-recorded was 1960

There wasn't one in 1969 for some reason which I can't be bothered to look up, but if anyone knows why?

There's a thread in Broadcasting talking about the golden age of TV 1976 Vs 2016 I also noticed there was no broadcast and apparently the reason was on Christmas day that year there was a documentary about the royals and it was thought to be enough.

I can't link to the answer as I'm on my phone.

It will go something like this ...

At times like these ones thoughts turn to one friends and family.
This is particularly true when ones family is the family of the commonwealth.
Thoughts turn to our armed forces overseas and those who are in armed conflicts around the globe.
It is a time of year when all faiths can come together In peace and harmony just like one does with ones loved ones over the Christmas dinner table.
Etc etc ..:.

Why not all she's doing is speaking a few words..... She's hardly juggling oranges is she
That's a fantastic idea, I would definitely tune in if she was juggling oranges. You should suggest this for next year.

Gives details of all the Royal Christmas messages over the years, including 1969.

No Christmas address was given by the Queen (in 1969), as Elizabeth felt that, between the investiture of her son, Prince Charles, as Prince of Wales and the release of the documentary Royal Family, she had had enough coverage on television; concern expressed by the public prompted the Queen to issue a statement that assured a return to tradition in 1970.[5] The Queen's written message acknowledged the end of the 1960s and the decade's significance for being the time when men first walked on the moon. She also stated that she was looking forward to her visit the next year to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and northern Canada. She also expressed her concern that "the lonely, the sick and the elderly" all feel the warmth and companionship of Christmas.[70]

The point of recording it is so that she can watch it at 3pm with everyone else while semi-sloshed
I've no idea if she's sloshed (semi or otherwise), but she does watch her own speech.

There was an early episode of QI where they went into remarkable detail about what happens at Sandringham on Christmas Eve and Day.

"Skipped church. The only holy water that one's on today is gin. #merrychristmas"

(Obviously a spoof account, in case anybody thinks otherwise )

If the Queen died between recording the message and Xmas Day, would it still be broadcast? Personally I would very much doubt it, maybe replaced by a message from Charles thanking everyone for their thoughts etc.

But somewhere there'll be a protocol I suppose.
No, it wouldn't but then you wouldn't get your normal programming.

I understand if the queen dies tv will stop broadcasting with only news bulletins shown ,about the queen dying or at least that was the plan a few years ago it will now be 24/7 news with newsreaders camping outside of the various palaces for days

Edit Found this http://uk.businessinsider.com/what-h...ii-dies-2015-3

As long as it's after Doctor Who then they can cancel whatever they want.

Cheers for that blueblade, I did have a quick browse on that page looking for info about 1969 earlier and for some reason I didn't scroll down and look right next next to the year! heh The bottle of Morgans rum might have had something to do with that, mores to the point, why the hell am I looking up Royal stuff? It's all history I guess, and I do like history.

I'm going to start a petition to make her juggle oranges next year. A government one.

What? Like a hologram? So, she's really a lizard then?

BBC announced this morning that she recorded it days ago. Doesn't matter to me, I never watch her anyway.
I am sure that her Majesty won't sleep tonight if she reads that.

If the Queen lives to 100, will she have to send a message to herself?

Yes, i remember her doing it live, but not for a few years now.
She did do it live up to that year they got Mick Fleetwood to co present with her. It was such a mess they prerecorded it after that.

Or am I mixing it up with Sam Fox and the Brits? Do that all the time

Well I watched the Queen's speech today. Blinked and that was it. 5 minutes if that. Sure they used to be longer. Must be the person propping her up got tired.

My guess would be because she was still in no fit state after attending the Woodstock festival in the summer and she misheard the warning to "stay away from the brown acid, cos it's baaaad acid maaan!" thought she was being directly addressed as 'Ma'aaam' and retorted "One will not follow orders from an unwashed peasant.... Flunkies - go and find one as many of these brown acid tabs as possible for one to partake of..... immediately!" She probably still hadn't recovered fully by the time of her Silver Jubilee in 1977.

Or maybe not.

Oh, please no. Surely a brief mention of it during the normal news programmes would suffice? Or at least restrict all the monotonous 'tribute' programmes to just one channel, so it can be avoided like the plague by all staunch anti-monarchists such as myself?

Oh well, looks like I'd better postpone watching any dvd's I accumulate from now on, in preparation to amuse myself on that day.

So apparently it appears Charlie boy can call himself any of his given names on his ascension to the throne? We may possibly have either King Arthur (with his Knights of the Round Table), or King Zorghthlikastet of the Reptilians then.
