Runaround: Christmas on Ice
For those of a certain age Mike Reid and Madness do Runaround.
13:30 Talking pictures TV. I'm out for my drive, get 'lost' around Kent, got about 6 new albums to listen, watch this later, hope it doesn't disappoint. |

I loved Runaround as a kid. Always wanted to go on and win a Chopper.

I can't believe that somebody else caught that. I thought I would have been the only one. That's why I didn't even bother posting about it.
![]() Madness performing on it was the best thing about it. This is definitely one of those shows I think you can apply the rose-tinted spectacles theory to. It was bloody awful. ![]() MIke Reid himself was just terrible. He was saying things which were even jokes, and then laughing at what he had just said, while everyone else is just watching him silently. It was quite something to see how he was able to come out with prejudiced and bigoted stuff, and on a kid's show too. They did put a warning on beforehand though. But it was a bit of a historical eye-opener. There was a bit where they invited on some pantomime or theatre group, and they just walked around the stage with comedy music...for ages...and that was it. MIke Reid just introduced who they were and then they just walked round the stage against music for a bit more before they walked off.

It's a shame there's no accessible 'On Safari' to compare it with ?

Just a random thing, why did Mike feel the need to throw in his version of the chalky white accent, when the bloke he'd just away from was obviously supposed to be Eskimo/Inuit with his Reindeer and Igloo? I don't get the connection. That 'Chalky White' supposedly West Indian accent, I don't get it, it's nothing like a Black person, it's all high pitched, well the most notable thing about Black accents is a certain bass in the voice. Only Black person I can think of who speaks a little like that is Rochester (Eddie Anderson) from The Jack Benny Show. Madness weren't up to much, dull to watch, Suggs couldn't remember where they were gigging, 'around the country' they found time to work something out with the Director so Suggs would do his thing by the Polar Bear. Shame they couldn't work out what Ruth Lindsay, the (good looking, Mike said so) championship Skater was going to do so they could sort the camera shots. Highlight was at the end with Mike and Big Daddy stood next to the Reindeer that wouldn't behave, waving it's head and collection of sharp antlers about, thought Mike or Big Daddy would be on the receiving end of an antler up the jaksi ![]() Edit: yes I'm peed off, wow we were easily pleased in the 'olden days' |

Oh bollox, I haven't watched my recording yet.
Hey ho, I'll have to give it a go, saw Mike Reid doing some awful old prejudiced guff on 'alright in the 70's' I was hoping he left that stuff for the adult programs. There was a bit where after that theatre troupe walked on he told them that they all looked great, especially the person dressed as a pig who just happened to be a very attractive woman. So although not something that would get people outraged and storming off to Twitter nowadays, it did come across as quite off and a bit seedy. Don't think I'm making out that it was something to be offended by, you probably won't be. It's just that you certainly notice how inappropriate and off some of it seems now watching it through modern eyes. I think the overriding impression you will get will probably not be of outrage, but wondering if you really liked this as a kid as it now appears to be so piss poor and unbelievably cheap. Edit: Ah yes, I see by your post above that you got around to watch it. Like me you didn't last long. Diabolical wasn't it? ![]() After ten minutes in it was torture and I couldn't bring myself to watch any more of it in realtime. I just fastforwarded it and skipped to Madness. I thought exactly the same as you as he went from the link from an Eskimo to a stereotypical black man accent of the time. I suspect that a glimpse of his thought process slipped out by accident which he didn't even mean to reveal. The only black men I've ever heard speak like that are black men of the time like Kenny Lynch doing an impression of a black man (which is a very weird thing for a kid to watch at the time) or comedians like Jim Davidson, and now obviously Mike Reid too. |
