For me, the Christmas show never really works, because the dances are wildly over-marked, and the winner seems randomly selected, and the whole event seems a bit flat and forced. And, as usual, the director is an idiot who seems to think it would be far too obvious and old-fashioned to actually show the steps on the screen.
![]() anyway I enjoyed the ludicrous marks (it reminded me of some of the confetti tens that rained down in the final of the main show), and glad o'doom won! And I voted for frankie in her year!

Oh no! I'm prepared to go with the manipulation for O'BLUBBER to win the main event
but O'doom as well? Never a fix, just a bit of fun. Fact is the audience wanted Melvin to win...it was a F.U.N. routine that actually had some interesting choreography. Sure it was his 'reward' for going out first week...but I didn't mind that one bit. Anyway gorka the porka was showing off!! ![]() |

I just watched it on BBCi player and really enjoyed it. It was fun and camp. Glad Melvin won. He wasn't the best dancer, but he was the most fun IMO.

The Christmas special is light fluff entertainment show full of happiness and cheer. Len was giving loads of Christmas cheer with his 10's (if Danny hadn't messed up his QS Len would have given all 10's on the main show final as well). Even Craig was relatively cheerful as well. So why anyone takes offence at Melvin's win is beyond me. And yes he was screwed over on the first elimination show. If Anastasia had danced it Melvin would probably have been eliminated anyway but there was no DO so Melvin never had the chance to improve - and I bet that was in the contract he signed. Keeping him and Janette around on ITT through the main show was probably reward for him being a gentleman about the entire mess. And yes maybe there was some sympathy for him - but a Charleston is fun and an audience pleaser and yes the majority of the class of 2016 were there to see him and that probably influenced the audience. But who cares - it's Christmas after all

It seemed odd having on the Christmas Special as most people have no idea who he is apart from having seen him briefly on the main programme.
I still don't know what he is supposed to do apart from dance badly Quote:
A normal person not pretending to be a celebrity on strictly
![]() Melvin is not "supposed to do" anything. You are clearly referring to what he does for a job so allow me to 'enlighten' you. Melvin is a radio DJ on popular London station Kiss FM. Alongside his work partner Rickie Haywood-Williams, they won a Silver Award at the Sony Music Awards in the most prestigious category of " Best Breakfast Show" in 2009. They trumped this at the same awards three years later by winning Gold. That is apart from the occassional TV presenting ( inclufing one series of The Xtra Factor) which he also does. So, hardly "pretending to be a celebrity..."(rolleyes) On the subject of Melvin's win, fair or otherwise, (I thought it was appropriately feel-good), he was not letting anyone stand in the way of his victory - even Tess, who he basically sidelined as Master of Ceremonies by grabbing that trophy as quickly as he possibly could, dispensing with all the protocol in the process lol!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() Lucky Bruce wasn't in charge - he would have been raging...!!! ![]() Good on yer Melv! |

DAvid obviously only watching the radio version of this show.
It's the studio audience that decides the winner, and with only about 5 points separating top from bottom of the leaderboard, with two couples tying top, it was the studio vote that really decided it; I think they all voted for Melvin's yellow trousers and Jeanette's imp costume. And it was a well choreographed routine, AND Melvin's timing was dead accurate, and he performed out of his skin. So unworthy ... not.![]() Why so many people drinking vinegar instead of champers or glühwein this Christmas? ![]() |

Well. First of all, they don't usually invite couples on to the Christmas Special who also participated on the main show of the same year. Also, when they do invite a celeb back, they aren't usually dancing with the same pro partner they had on the main show (even if the pro dancer is available).
I said at the time when watching the announcement on ITT of who was going to appear, that I would put my house on Melvin and Janette winning it. I had absolutely no doubt about it at all. Sometimes you can just read between the lines and can see that this is what the producers want. What happened on the main show when Melvin and Janette were eliminated is going to be extremely fresh in the memories of the studio audience (the Xmas Special was actually filmed in November) and so I don't think that you have to be Einstein to work out that there will be some sympathy voting going on... I think they should have thought more about what to do under certain circumstances because I got the impression that they really didn't know what to do when when the situation with Anastacia occurred. There were people on this forum who are part of the backstage crew on the show and they said at the time that the producers didn't know what to do. There was a massive delay while they worked it all out. Apparently, the studio audience were there on Saturday night until rather late due to what happened. There was a massive backlash on this forum and on social media about this. I think if the rules were more clear (and available at the start of the series) then the backlash wouldn't have occurred. People would have been able to read the rules for themselves before the situation occurred. The fact that the producers gave Melvin and Janette a reoccurring slot on ITT and a place on this year's Christmas Special indicates that they felt they had to compensate them for what happened. If they were simply applying the rules then I'm not sure there would have been a need to compensate them in such a way. |

The Strictly Christmas Special is a part of our family Christmas Day now and I thought it was a brilliant show
![]() My personal favourite couple was Gethin and Chloe. Melvin and Janette deserved the win though, their routine was fun and inventive with some clever lifts. Frankie danced beautifully but I didn't think they should have referenced her 'Wicked' Tango with Kevin at the end. Thought the ending took away from the rest of her and Gorka's performance. |

I would have been happy if Anton had finally won something, but in all honesty Melvin's charleston was the dance of the night - well danced and great fun. So pleased that he won.

I'm not usually over-keen on the Christmas shows, but thought this year's was great. As a dancer, I would normally "go" for the best dancer but in this show my two favourites were the two who entertained the most - Melvin and Ainsley.
Ainsley danced so much better than he ever did with Natalie, which possibly meant she wasn't giving him the right choreography? And Melvin's attempt made me wonder just how far he would have got in the main show if he hadn't been short-changed! Was really pleased to see him win ![]() ![]()

The first part is rubbish actually - I think having current competing couples in the Xmas show dates back to series two and it lasted until at least series six and the celebs in question were always with their pro of that year. In fact in series six Brendan danced with his current partner Lisa Snowden and it was his former partner from the previous year Kelly Brook who was re-allocated to Brian Fortuna. So either you are very young, a very recent viewer of SCD or your memory is shot to pieces anyway you are wrong.
They changed the trend (of the last seven years) this year to invite Melvin and Janette on to this year's Xmas Special. This is no coincidence - they did this to compensate him for what happened on the main show. This was my point (which you seem to have completely missed...). I didn't say that they never invite couples on from the current series, but that it is something that they don't usually do at least in terms of the last seven years. When people break trend it is natural that people will be interested in the reasons why. Oh and there is nothing wrong with my memory. |

In my comment I said that they don't usually invite couples onto the Christmas Special that competed in the current series and this is certainly true for the last seven years.

I don't normally enjoy or even bother with the Christmas Specials as I find them rather a let down and boring. However I did watch this year and I did enjoy it. It was a real fun show that was obviously not meant to be taken as a serious competition. All the celebs and Pro's looked as though they really enjoyed themselves and had a great time during the show. And that is what this show should be about.
I never know why the judges bother with scores as they clearly don't mean anything in the Christmas special, the way the 10's are handed out, but it all adds to the feel good factor of the show. It is very much meant as entertainment, light and fluffy as Len would say. Did the best dancers win...no, but Melvin and Janette brought the spirit of Christmas to their dance in bucket loads. |

You didn't specify the last seven years and at the end of the day it's a Christmas special - I sincerely doubt that Pamela, Gethin, Frankie, Denise and especially Ainsley are crying into their beer about it.

I don't understand your last point about Pamela, Gethin etc. I don't think anyone is saying that they'd be bothered by it, I think the point that some people have been making is that when you break trend like that it is kind of obvious what the producers want to happen. I think last year's Xmas Special was more fun and was better imo. |

As it's the third time, by my count, Gethin had been on a Christmas special ... and lost ... I think we can assume he knows the score
![]() ![]() What does everyone think about pro dancer Chloe's performance on the Xmas Special? I noticed earlier in the thread that she got some criticism from other FMs. If she is on the main show next year, do you think she should be given a celebrity partner? |

Just caught up by watching it on iPlayer.
It was alright. None of the choreography was impressive. I thought Pamela danced as well as anyone. She changed my mind when she was on Series 8, and still moves well at 67 years old. If you're good enough, you're young enough.

The point is I didn't say that they never have couples on from the current series, your earlier comment seemed to suggest that I did. I said that they don't usually have couples on from the current series, which is correct. You have to go back seven years for the previous time that they did have couples on from the current main series, so I think it is correct to say that they don't usually invite current series couples on.

I thought Chloe did really well. She's a lovely dancer and her QS with Gethin was my favourite routine of the show. I'm personally really hoping she gets a partner next year.

I'm sure I saw Will Young seated with the rest at the beginning but he then disappeared? Also, does anyone know what had happened before the final to Tameka yet? She's suddenly disappeared to sunnier climes on EE too. |
