By DS standards because she's a woman!!!
And by some DS standards - doesn't matter what the character's actually like or if the acting's good, there are some posters will only like her because she's a young woman.
Would you be making that claim if it the subject was Eileen, Rita or Audrey?

I think the reason I am not keen on Maria is I feel that she can't be defined as an individual but only by blokes as she seems to jump from one relationship to another and seems to always be desperate. She also seems to be quite boring. She doesn't seem to have proper female friends, never seems to do anything interesting.

Boring whiny character and mediocre actress who has never improved.

Just quoting myself to say I know I've goofed and is now too late to edit.
I wouldn't worry Red-Eye. From what I've seen there's little distinction between Cotton and his character anyway.

Maria is an immoral woman who neglects her young son; how can anyone like the character?
I agree.

She's just a miserable bitch.

By that strange logic no one likes Sean Cotton because he's a man!

Not everything is B&W nor comes down to sexism you know.
More to do with the fact he is gay.

She treats men like dirt and now we're supposed to feel sorry for her because she's going to prison for committing a crime that she knew full well she was committing. Horrible character.

Whilst I'm sure some do dislike him purely because he's gay (which is very petty and uncalled for) but I don't think that's the reason with most folks.

The actor Antony Cotton has a reputation of not being a very pleasant guy and I think it's now rubbed off on Sean Tully as result (since Antony Cotton himself has admitted he's just playing himself).

On Topic

Never been a Maria fan.

I like Maria, always have. I do hope prison toughens her up a bit. I would also put money on her being pregnant and not know who the father is - Adam or Aidan.

My money's on Adam, it can't be Eva.

She's just boring. Every now and then the writers need to give her something to do and it always involves her getting with someone else's man. She does nothing for months then sets her sights on some neighbour who's been under her nose all the time and we then have her caught in various states of undress until it fizzles out then she disappears again. She would be more likeable if she helped others or did something really life changing. The only thing she regularly changes is her man. But only for another who lives in the same street.
I wish they would go down the 'single mother' route properly, and explore how difficult that is. Everytime Maria lets a man into her bed, you aren't convinced it'll last long and she'll just pick up the pieces. Liam almost knows the drill.

Although Aidan is a good catch, I wish she got together with an older, mature fella with no strings attached.

Maria is probably my favourite stalker in any soap. My main concern was her choice of victim - I mean, that bacon barm eating, thick as two planks mechanic wasn't exactly an inspired choice. However, she stalked him pretty well so nuff respect to her.

Me too. I liked her with Luke. I thought Maria, Liam and Luke worked well.

I wouldn't call her unpopular.

She just isn't a character who can make an impact even when she is at the centre of a big storyline. I think the actress is better when her involvement in a storyline is much smaller.
