Flicking through the channels and there's absolutely nothing of interest to watch. All it seems to be is old movies, soaps, repeats and kids programmes/films. I don't know why channels bother broadcasting on Christmas day tbh.

It has been like that for years

My favourite is Top of the Pops, The Queen, Emmerdale, Corrie, the News and the Dramas on ITV1

I've searched through the listings several times (Freesat) and can honestly say the only thing I plan to watch is Doctor Who and even then I'm not getting my hopes up the Christmas episodes are all or nothing.

The only things that interest me are on iPlayer, Netflix and the Now TV boxsets.

I wondered when the inevitable 'Christmas TV is crap' thread would pop up.

Two decent film premieres on today: Frozen and Dallas Buyers Club (for those who missed them at the cinema) and a new production of King Lear. Otherwise haven't seen much of interest, but not bothered as I have loads of recorded stuff to catch up on!

Not exactly great Christmas viewing that.
Once was enough! Very grim.

Normal then? It is like that every day, so no different to any other day

What has happened with both BBC and ITV; they haven't moved with the times.

And not just at Christmas, in general both the BBC and ITV are losing the under 40s.
But you don't have to be under 40 to find the array of programming very dated.

It's playing it safe of course, understandable coming from ITV. But what's the BBCs excuse?

Apart from some stuff on C4 and one show from BBC4, everything else I'm watching is classic stuff on Netflix.

Christmas TV is shite again this year. So far today I've watched YouTube for some background music whilst doing dinner, The Revenant which was saved for today in sky plus. And then some episodes of The Ship left over. So not festive but better than the ball aching cack served up by network TV.

So what would be a modern programme idea for, say, 8 or 9PM on BBC One on Xmas night?

Dunno between 8pm and 9, but after nine they could at least put some porn on. Maybe a retro flick from the 70's?? Obviously censored so you can't see them smoking....

What if a comedy actor/actress had a one off comedy in the 9PM slot? Who would people like to see?

I usually find when someone claims there is absolutely nothing to watch on TV then if they can persuaded to say what they want on TV, it sounds rubbish and nothing that appeals to me. Usually science fiction stuff or American soap operas.

I'd love to see Andrew Lawrence or Frankie Boyle, but then the BBC wouldn't like that one bit.

Last year Netflix saved my xmas viewing with Making a Murderer. I didn't think there was anything to top it this Xmas but I was wrong....

Just finished watching The OA on Netflix which has kept me occupied for the last two days while there's nothing on terrestrial/sky. Glad I chanced across this. Easily the best thing I've seen on for tv for many years.

And here's what you could have watched 80 years ago.

It's all very well saying 'but they're classics' which is of course true, but to keep on rolling out the likes of Morecambe & Wise, Dads Army etc etc is lazy telly. I agree with others, for those that don't have families kids etc to distract them over the festive period, it's slim pickings ...

Take a looksy over at Netflix/Amazon, or some of the long-form "programmes" on Youtube.
