The Christmas That Goes Wrong
Did anyone else have the misfortune to catch this drivel on Radio 2 this morning?
I did and turned off after five minutes. Okay, so Junior Choice was out of the question this Christmas following the loss of Stewpot in January, but whoever decided that TCTGW would be an adequate replacement for it should be shot. These guys should stick to amateur dramatics (with the emphasis on "amateur"). |

Caught about five minutes of it, whilst I was waiting for Paul O'Grady's programme to start, thought it was awful, just painful to listen to.

I'm easy to make laugh, but this wasn't funny on any level. I hope it's a one-off and it won't be back next year.

Caught the first 10 minutes. They mistakenly played Cliff's Summer Holiday for White Christmas, twice. Turned over.
Having said that, looking forward to Peter Pan goes wrong on TV. |

I have to say it was one of the oddest things I've heard in a long time
Started to listen and thought 'This is dire' and was about to switch off but thought some of the so called unguarded moments were truely funny and kept listening. It reminded me of a sort of cheaper version of the Victor Lewis-Smith show he did on radio 1 years ago He was a true comedy genius Who can forget the wheelchair trumpet playing man falling out of his wheelchair while on the phone to Ester Rantzen, truely brilliant I think today's effort was an interesting experiment which could have 'legs' BTW I'm sure one of the presenters was Christopher Biggins not sure who the other guy was but would be intrigued to find out. |

I assume it was based on the London Play That Goes Wrong. Problem is, people tuning in without knowing the Radio 2 schedule without knowing that background would be wondering what the hell was going on, and 10am on Christmas Day is still quite a prominent position for an experiment.
As I recall they popped up on the Royal Variety and were well received by viewers, so maybe this led to Radio 2 deciding to give them a shot. And maybe it just didn't translate. |

I only listened to a little of it - I'm not sure it translated well. However, well done to the BBC for trying something a bit different. Most of the commercial radio schedules were devoid of imagination (Classic FM perhaps being an honourable exception).

Haven't listened to this but have seen two of their plays at the theatre. Their comedy is very visual and physical and the biggest laughs come from painful-looking collisions and falls that break every health and safety rule. They aren't exactly subtle, but very funny and talented and definitely not "amateurs". Maybe radio isn't their forte though.
Will try to listen to the show some time. |

I wasn't really paying attention to the radio, but after hearing summer holiday twice and the inane drivel and so not funny wittering I turned over to classic fm and stayed there the rest of the day.
It really did seem a very odd and prominent time for radio 2 to try an 'experiment' ... surely that's the sort of thing they play at 9pm during the week. |

Ah, so that's what I was (briefly) listening to yesterday morning. It was certainly an odd thing to join midway. I didn't particularly mind it, but I had no idea who or what was on.

I saw Peter Pan Goes Wrong at the Apollo on Saturday week. I'm often not a fan of contemporary comedy, but this production was absolutely hilarious. It's only on until 29 January so you'll have to book quickly if you want to see it.
However, I'm not sure it would translate well to radio: it's highly visual and relies on interaction between members of the cast and with the audience. Similarly, the theatre is a shared experience, so I fear that more would be lost unless you all sit down and listen to the radio together. It'll be interesting to see how well it transfers to box. |
