It is not realistic that so many staff members would've gone abroad at the same time. They left Poplar severely understaffed. If Poplar didn't need that many midwifes/nurses then they wouldn't still be employed there. It would never have happened like it did in the special. It was stretching realism and it was all an unconnected and rather pointless story that seemed more like a way to write Trixie out of the show for a while.
There were locum doctors and midwives just as we have now.
My father was a GP and he and his nursing staff were covered by locums during holidays.

Thank you for your patience Swan!
I know the storyline, especially after the first two (or three?) series, isn't correct, but I understood that the people at the start were all real and apart from Cynthia, Jennifer gave them pseudonyms. I know Trixie is barely mentioned in the book and I didn't mean the portrayal of her was accurate.
I hope this makes some sense
Hi

Yes, I know what you mean. I think she did give some people pseudonyms eg Sr Julienne who was strongly based on a real person. But with Trixie I think she just took interesting characteristics from different colleagues, so all the different bits were 'real', but the full character wasn't , if that makes sense.

So did a lot of other people.

Some earlier posters seemed to be writing the show off but clearly the clash with Coronation Street effected the overnights.

Plenty of people didn't particularly enjoy it. Ratings are no indication of if people liked it or not. People have to watch the episode before they can have an opinion on it.

A little off-topic. What Jennifer Worth wrote, she wrote more as an author and not as a historian. I feel she was a "untrustworthy" author in many senses, so I don't find it so alarming that others have taken on the history of midwifery and social history further ( = Heidi Thomas). Sister Evangelina never was a parachiute jumper (no such thing in 1918), and Sister Bernadette's later biography is extrarordinary in the sense that she didn't exist....(she left Angican Church accordin g to JW)
But what a joy Jennifer's imaginings of what might have happened are ( = if she had stayed at Poplar longer and if she'd been at all those births she tells about, as she evidently wasn't an eye-witness).

The first successful parachute jump was made in 1783. The first jump from an aeroplane was made in 1911. The first woman to make a parachute jump did so in 1913.

Got round to watching this last night. Been away on holiday and got back on Tuesday. I saw it was based in SA and thought here we go again BBC and their obsession with SA but was pleasantly surprised. I've always enjoyed the main series episodes more so my expectation was relatively low. It was as good as other Christmas episodes. It's a funny show to fit into Christmas day as the tone of the regular series isn't really a fit. As for the show itself I thought it had begun to wane but last series marked for me a return to form. I enjoyed the ensemble nature of the episodes. It's a good Sunday night show in winter!
