It was brilliant and had me smiling all the way through

Dot telling the cat off for licking itself in front of the Queen had me laughing out loud!!

Great episode.

The line about Dot's pussy had me absolutely howling

It was wonderful - no gimmicks, no stunts, just a nice warm hearted community spirited episode. People complaining get over yourself , let them have one nice Christmas as all you do is call it depressing and when it does nice - it's boring - can't win at all!!! People just want shock, shock, shock - short attention span for anything else, deffo not good character driven episodes - stick with hollyoaks if that's the case you'll love that! I watched the other soaps and that was the best IMO.

I enjoyed it which is surprising considering I do enjoy a good moan. It was easy viewing at the end of a very hectic day.

I thought Dot and her pussy stole the whole episode. Loved her put down to Jane. In fact I enjoyed the whole hour.

You don't have to write it out any more Sulla, you can actually use the rolley-eyes smiley again now.

But why is it that everyone is assuming someone can't have an opinion somewhere in the middle? I do not think I(for example) can be accused of having a short attention span, or only wanting sensationalist shocks. I consider myself a relatively "careful/ thoughtful" type of viewer.

I didn't love the episode. To me the whole tone of the episode was rather still. Nothing really stood out too much. Someone in another thread pointed out that even the more dramatic moments weren't really played as dramatically as they could have been, were not necessarily built up as they could've been. That it lacked some tension. Sorry, but I agree with that.

Thing is SOC has only just started and for the most part he hasn't built up a lot of plots and drama yet. So when we go "scaled back" it doesn't exactly feel as if has that right balance yet. If throughout the rest of the year the scaled back approach is interspersed with some true drama, then that's a different thing. Yes, I was glad to see that the NY's trailer did look more dramatic.

No he hasn't only just started! He's been here 6 months. By that time in DTC tenure we had a new family in the Vic, and Lucy's murder was on the horizon

I thought it was rather lame myself. I get what others are saying that it doesn't have to be all about shocks, deaths etc but I think as a viewer, the very least you should be entertained. All it was was one big knees up in the vic, a few funny liners and Phil getting a kidney. That's not my idea of a Christmas episode, especially when you look at what EE is capable of and what they have delivered in the past. They can do sooo much better.

Christmas is the one episode in the year where my whole extended family come down and we watch together. It's a tradition. However we were all unanimous that is was boring and underwhelming.

I don't mind a happy Christmas. The fact that it was predominantly positive doesn't bother me but like others said, it didn't really go anywhere. For me there has to be a overriding plot line, positive or negative, that draws on its characters and come to its conclusion. I'm just thinking Christmas 2005. Not a favourite of mine but it was a memorable, positive episode which saw Kat marry Alfie. Everyone took to the streets and had a street party. There were no deaths, no major shocks but it ended on a positive note. If you are going to do positive and a happy Xmas, that the kind of drama I'd want. This years Xmas episode was one big cheese fest that failed to engage me as a viewer. Community feel... yeah yeah.... at the crux of it is a drama and I do think xmas and new year are the two days of the year that a soap should be able to deliver both.

However in all fairness the show has been incapable of delivering a decent Xmas episode in the last 5 years. That star dust forumula is no more. I wasn't expecting anything spectacular tonight (I really do think those days are over) but I expected it to hold interest. It really didn't. Truth be told, that episode could have easily fitted into a 30 minute time slot.. Come to think of it, it would probably be received better if it had.

I didn't mind the episode, yes it wasn't full of the usual big shocks and drama EE often brings us at Christmas, but to be honest it made quite a nice change.
Shame Max's return was spoilt as that would have been a nice little surprise at the end.
I felt the inuendos started getting ott and childish, they should have just had Ethel's little Willy and little tinkle but they just kept pushing it, started to feel more like some weird kids show about how many naughty lines they could get in it.

I do feel an hour was stretching things for what the episode was. At times it dragged a bit, and why do soaps (not just EE) focus so much on preparing/cooking christmas dinner. Also why does nearly every family have to eat turkey? I'm glad they showed the Beales having something different. Why do they rarely show first thing in the morning with the young children pestering the parents to open presents, show the family watching christmas tv, going out for a family walk. I'm not saying focus on these things, but just feature them a little instead of 90% of the episode being about the dinner.

Must admit though, I did kind of miss some big story that's been building up over months finally coming to a climax.

Excellently put.

I love EE and have done for many years. My opinion, that I found last nights ep to be the least compelling or interesting xmas ep I've ever seen, is my own and doesn't detract from my love of the show. Rather it points I feel to the lack of creativity, invention, talent and effort driving the storylines and execution at present.

The actors the show employs (who must have been cringing this week while performing the various sing-a-longs) and the millions of viewers who tuned in expectantly, deserve so much better than the cheesy non-dramatic dross being served up at present.

A couple of surprises with Phil's operation & Lee's arrest plus if you were unspoilt, Max at the end.

I really liked it, quite funny with some nice moments & drama with Phil etc.

I think having Max earlier may have helped but overall, pretty good.
