Only 53 - thought he was way older than that!

Drugs caught up with him then - live by the sword etc.

A great shame - although (like Status Quo and Parfitt) I did not rate him as highly as some.

Was he culturally that significant? Not being flippant now, but the comments seem to suggest this is pretty monumental.

RIP of course and sad for anyone to die at that age these days
Just a bit young to be dead with no underlying health issues.

He was a huge star at his peak. Great writer and singer.

Over 100m albums sold according to the BBC.

35 year career.

That's huge.

This one's shocked me just as much as when I heard about David Bowie back at the start of the year. I really can't believe how many singers and musicians we've lost these last 12 months.

The Wham thing was rubbish and i always thought of them as a pair of jokers, but George Michael could certainly sing and sing damned good.

He gave this stunning performance at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert.

Wow. And not 'wow' in a good way. What a year it's been.

I was only saying today that every time I flick on to one of the music channels it's been the Last Christmas video.

Drugs? Aids maybe? People don't just 'pass away peacefully' at 53.

A haunting song of his, still relevant to today:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goroyZbVdlo

"It's hard to love,
when there's so much to hate
hanging on to hope,
when there is no hope to speak of,
.....and the wounded sky's above,
say it's much too late,
so maybe we should all be praying for time."

George Michael, singer of 'Last Christmas, and integral in 'Do they know it's Christmas' dying on Christmas Day is so 2016.

I liked George Michael, particularly liked the 'Outside' era.

Why do people feel the need to post such crass comments? If you can't be kind, then why not just keep quiet?

I've seen him live many times and he was frankly incredible. To die today of all days, truly awful.

The poor bloke was plagued by depression. I just hope to god it was quick and peaceful and that it wasn't by his own hand. An incredible talent and a great loss.

I for one will miss him terribly and am incredibly greatful to him, as he fuelled my early love of music.

Rest easy George xxx
