He's significant enough for me to burst into tears when the news came up on my Ipad. I'm 50 and I don't usually cry. I'm really shocked.

Unbelievable news. RIP George.

I've seen him live many times and he was frankly incredible. To die today of all days, truly awful.

The poor bloke was plagued by depression. I just hope to god it was quick and peaceful and that it wasn't by his own hand. An incredible talent and a great loss.

I for one will miss him terribly and am incredibly greatful to him, as he fuelled my early love of music.

Rest easy George xxx”

hear, hear.
He was an amazing performer live.

Too tempting to use that as part of the thread title and bad taste, but surprised at how many posters must have been lurking in the background on GD until now!

Four pages in 30 minutes.

Would be kind of fitting as it was denied the number 1 spot by the steamroller that was Band Aid.

Just found out, did the same. I wasn't a massive fan but really thought he was good.

And he's, I don't know, my generation, and I am shocked.

Bloody hell. What a year. As a child of the eighties this stuff hits me harder than others this year. Bloody hell......

It's quite a decent joke actually, considering he died at Christmas.

Yeah, I just didn't want the grief from all the snowflakes who haven't got a sense of humour and feel the need to comment on everything.

a very talented man but also quite a troubled man he never really got over his Mum dying did he

He was also a very generous man he did huge amounts for Charity often digging deep into his own pocket

Yeah this one has the biggest impact for me. He was a part of my childhood. A great great talent.

Hmm, it's not ironic, though, as he's singing about his previous Christmas, not his final Christmas - but that's just me being pedantic.

Without wishing to detract from the joke, he might have died last night, not today.

Quote:
“Thames Valley Police said South Central Ambulance Service attended a property in Goring in Oxfordshire at 13:42 GMT. [...]

In a statement, the star's publicist said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period."”

after that I listened to some of his earlier stuff and liked Careless Whisper, Club Tropicana, Last Christmas...........

A very talented songwriter and singer

RIP George”

I'm 53 and was cynical of his early work at first. Then I grew up and realised he was a major player and I actually liked it.

I remember the Public and Tabloid storms over his 'problems' which only endeared him to me more.

Yes we don't know. Only 53. The announcement says 'peacefully' rather than say 'suddenly' which sort of suggests he's been ill.

13.42 GMT means 13.42pm today, Sunday 25th December 2016!

Yes that's true. I've always been more into classical music and for me I could not initially understand why there was barely any coverage or reaction when Joan Sutherland ('La Stupenda', and probably the best operatic soprano of all time) died.

It was one of those points in time when you feel really at odds with popular culture!

I feel sad that George Michael died; it's a very young age to go these days, and happening over Christmas adds a horrid dimension, and he clearly influenced many people. His work had no effect on me whatsoever though.

Wake me up, faith, cearless whisper, club tropicana, last christmas, outside...

All really good.

I like that his sexual indiscretions in the late 90s didn't end his career. He took it in good humour, made a load of money from it and it was soon forgotten.
