Was he culturally that significant? Not being flippant now, but the comments seem to suggest this is pretty monumental.
RIP of course and sad for anyone to die at that age these days ![]() |

He's significant enough for me to burst into tears when the news came up on my Ipad. I'm 50 and I don't usually cry. I'm really shocked.
RIP George.

Why do people feel the need to post such crass comments? If you can't be kind, then why not just keep quiet?
I've seen him live many times and he was frankly incredible. To die today of all days, truly awful. The poor bloke was plagued by depression. I just hope to god it was quick and peaceful and that it wasn't by his own hand. An incredible talent and a great loss. I for one will miss him terribly and am incredibly greatful to him, as he fuelled my early love of music. Rest easy George xxx He was an amazing performer live. |

So hilarious that everyone thought of it within a few seconds of reading the news... including me. (I chose not to post it, I knew that a lot of others would)

And he's, I don't know, my generation, and I am shocked. |

It's quite a decent joke actually, considering he died at Christmas.

Thames Valley Police said South Central Ambulance Service attended a property in Goring in Oxfordshire at 13:42 GMT. [...]
In a statement, the star's publicist said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period." |

I was too old for Wham when they came along so it wasn't until quite a bit later that I noticed George Michael was a talent.............
I think this was the video that I noticed............ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsKqMNDoR4o after that I listened to some of his earlier stuff and liked Careless Whisper, Club Tropicana, Last Christmas........... A very talented songwriter and singer RIP George Quote:
Ya know what. if gonna listen to camp 80's pop, you might as well go for something properly over the top.
He was Good at that. Very, very, good. If fact if im ever in the mood for plastic pop, he'd be my go to... I remember the Public and Tabloid storms over his 'problems' which only endeared him to me more. |

That's what I thought. We'll have to wait to hear exactly what happened.
It's on the BBC News now... [Edit] Still a mystery. A stroke while sleeping, perhaps.

Without wishing to detract from the joke, he might have died last night, not today.

If you grew up in the 80s then there were a number of bands that were really huge. Wham were one of these. So yes, for people of a certain age he was culturally significant.
It was one of those points in time when you feel really at odds with popular culture! I feel sad that George Michael died; it's a very young age to go these days, and happening over Christmas adds a horrid dimension, and he clearly influenced many people. His work had no effect on me whatsoever though. |

I'm 53 and was cynical of his early work at first. Then I grew up and realised he was a major player and I actually liked it.
I remember the Public and Tabloid storms over his 'problems' which only endeared him to me more. All really good. |

I like that his sexual indiscretions in the late 90s didn't end his career. He took it in good humour, made a load of money from it and it was soon forgotten.
