BBC News reporting that George Michael has died. His publicist says he passed away peacefully this afternoon.

Terrible news. He had his issues but I didn't see this coming. We were chatting about him only two hours ago during the Channel 5 Christmas Songs countdown and they had the Last Christmas video. He was in two of the top three songs. My condolences to all.

A dreadful year for the Great 80's artists. I am sure I am not including others too, but to have David Bowie, Prince and George Michael pass away in a few months is a huge loss. They all had more to offer.

It hits home more when it's someone the same age as you.

I had loads of Wham posters back in the day.

Mum saw it on her iPad. Her LBC radio app notified her and I told her to turn on a news channel. I'm shocked 53 is very young. 2016 has claimed the lives of so many. They're not saying yet what he died from.

Very Sad news. I didn't know he was ill.

George Michael gave one of his finest performances at Freddy Mercury's tribute concert.

He defined that concert

He also blew Elton away on Eltons own song. Dude was a maverick

George was simply up there with all the greatest live performers and songwriters.

Even at 42 I am devastated. What an awful end to the day.

Rest easy now George xxx

This is a haunting song of his, which is still relevant to today:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goroyZbVdlo

"It's hard to love,
when there's so much to hate
hanging on to hope,
when there is no hope to speak of,
.....and the wounded sky's above,
say it's much too late,
so maybe we should all be praying for time."

Apologies that in my op I put that his publicist said he died this afternoon-I was misreading the ticker on the news channel, it actually said he passed away peacefully at home and the ambulance service attended his property this afternoon.

I did the same thing as you while Jane Hill was doing her bulletin tonight. I'm just literally stunned by the news.

All news containing deaths of major 80's icons this year have really been heartbreaking with only one week to go to start 2017. All I can offer at this time are my sincere condolences to George Michael's family and friends.

A truly talented artist of his generation. May he R.I.P.

I feel as lousy as I did when I heard David Bowie and Prince died.

This is a haunting song of his, which is still relevant to today:

Very haunting song and as relevant today as it was in 1990. One of my personal favourites too and I'm grateful I got to see him perform in it live. I'd been on his website to check out the latest about the special edition of Listen Without Prejudice on Christmas Eve and had listened to Father Figure and December Song earlier on Christmas Day.

A friend commented that 2016 has taken an age of music from us this year and like Cissy Fairfax put he, David Bowie and Prince had so much to offer.

It's a pity a lot of people can't get passed the personal problems. For me his voice is one of the few I genuinely find emotive. It was impossible to not feel the sadness when he sang Jesus to a Child live each time I did.

My son told me a short while ago. I didn't believe it at first, and I just feel so, so sad.

I was watching him on Top of the Pops 1982 the other day as Wham, singing "Young Guns" (go for it) and was mesmerised watching him. How he moved, sang, he had such presence.

God bless you, beautiful man.

I don't know what people's favourite songs of George was?

I love: "Faith",
His collaboration with Aretha Franklin " I knew you Were Waiting"
"Wake me up before you go go"
"Outside"
"Don't let the Sun go Down on Me" with Elton John. I say with Elton John, because although I know this is Elton's song, George fits this song like a snug glove.
"Careless Whisper"
"Everything she Wants"

Really, I could could go on and on.

Can't believe it.

There are only ever two songs I feel I can fully relate to-as if someone had written them about me. One of them is 'Fast Love'. Am really shocked at George's passing; only yesterday morning I was listening to Last Christmas/Everything She Wants on the 7" vinyl I purchased last week. Towards the end of Everything She Wants the needle started to jump; thinking back just now... it's un-nerved me.

This song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6r5Dhqaay4E (One More Try) is another absolute favourite of mine. I didn't know of the song until Beverley Knight covered it on her Soul UK album a few years ago.

Used to sing Young Guns (Go For It!) in my after-school job with some of the other people I worked with; they even used to joke that I resembled a young George Michael.

When I saw he'd been planning on releasing some new material in 2017 I was looking forward to seeing what he'd come up with-I guess we'll never know now

Six more days and we will be in another year finally.

God bless you and his family always!!!

Holly

P.S. I wasn't a fan, but if there is any song from him that I don't mind, its "I'm Never Going To Dance Again".

Shocking news.

RIP George.

I know you have to be careful with hyperbole at these times but I would have said this BEFORE this sad news. One of THE great British singers of all time (his songwriting was pretty special as well).

His cover of Bonnie Raitt's 'I Can't Make You Love Me' was just incredible. Goosebumps.
