It's sad when anyone passes when they've barely reached their half century but I have to agree on the overkill bit.

Here's what Radio 2 played yesterday between 2pm & 5pm, I was in the car for two hours of that and I could have easily re-tuned but I like Craig Charles.

Interesting the media waited until Christmas night to announce his death so it wouldn't have spoilt celebrations. I would guess that was planned.

I suspect it was more to do with the family and the authorities not announcing the news until various procedures had been completed. A 53 year old discovered dead is not something considered run of the mill

This'll show up which networks are automated this evening. Just heard Smooth doing a link about the news.
why is this in radio?

Not in deciding what coverage to give them at the point in time we're comparing. When Frank Sinatra died he was over 80 and his songs were already only played on a few oldies stations. It is very different for George Michael as he still had more than 50% of the population as fans from his 30 year career in their 20's,30's,40's and 50's, it is also within the scope of Heart's playlist, Magic, Gold the lot.

If there was a popular appeal figure to guide stations now on what their listeners would be interested in for a cross section of the UK population, George Michael would be more than double Frank Sinatra in appeal.
I suspect any tributes to Sinatra occupying the same length of time as some outlets have devoted to George Michael would have included a much wider variety of material. Whilst George Michael recorded many songs over the years, it's the same 15 or 20 tracks which tend to be featured over and over again on radio and have been used to the exclusion of almost anything else in tributes since his death, and however big a fan of his you might be there is surely a limit to how many times you want to hear them.

Well, it could have been a minute before he was discovered, or 12 hours, but
without a crystal ball, or access to the pathologist's report, who knows ? Does it matter ?
