EE: Does anyone else feel a bit sorry for Lee?
I know what Lee has done is absolutely hideous, to deliberately endanger your family is an absolutely disgraceful and shameful thing to do, not to mention the other things he has done over the past few days and weeks.
But on one level I feel sorry for him. He has screwed up in a big way, he also feels inadequate compared to Mick. His family are going to be so angry at him, which is going to leave him feeling even more isolated. He has made horrendous choices, but I can't help but feel a bit sorry for him too. |

Yes. I know what he did was terrible, but we've seen over the last few months that Lee is suffering with deep-seated depression. Depression is an illness in the same way that Phil's alcoholism is an illness. I'm not trying to excuse either Lee's awful decisions (or indeed Phil's terrible behaviour this past year - he very nearly killed Denny and Louise on two seperate occasions) but merely trying to understand it. He put his family through hell and Mick has every right to give him a dressing down, but Lee really isn't thinking straight. He thinks of himself as a failure. I genuinely think that he seems to hate himself. It's self-loathing which is symptomatic of depression. And (though Lee has to take responsibility for his own actions) Whitney hasn't exactly helped the situation. Lee's depression isn't her fault, but I'm getting tired of seeing her piling on demands on him. The carters are a sham family, essentially. They talk about closeness but it's really on a superficial level.

I felt incredibly sorry for him re his depression, but now... No. Too many stupid and vile actions, too many self inflicted problems. Depression doesn't make you have your family home robbed.

Er....no! I don't feel sorry for him at all! I did feel for him over the depression storyline but as someone else posted above depression does not make you decide to rob your own family. Lee has no one to blame but himself for his life - he was doing well in the army but couldn't control his temper. He got a job at a pub - assistant manager was it? - But jacked it in after a few days. Johnny has tried to help him recently as he knows lee's been worried about money but Lee has just been vile to him. He set up a robbery at his own family's HOME where his baby brother was just to get a few quid. He's robbed Billy and his own neighbour. He might have got caught up in wanting to impress Whitney but he knew what he was doing was wrong. will be interesting to see how mick reacts when he finds out. Will he give him a talking to but ultimately support him? Or will he disown him?

I did up until the robbery as I know he was suffering from depression, which my dad had and I can relate to as it made him do some absolutely terrible things which tore my family apart, but after that he's been a complete scumbag and Fitney deserves better.

So no, I do not feel bad for him, I feel worse for the family, even though they have been complete idiots believing everything he said. |

No, he's a total, spineless idiot. He should just tell Whitney he's not making as much as he thought blah blah she loves him anyway, he's not going to lose her for that but he probably will when she finds out everything.

No, he's a dull character and badly written imo. Possibly badly acted too, but so badly written it's hard to tell.

No, he is a complete waste of space and a utter spineless wimp should have manned up and told the truth about his crap job months ago and told Whitney not to be such a parasite get off her backside and get a job instead of just swanning about wasting money.

No. I feel for him for depressions, but he's endangered his whole family just to keep up his lies. Whitney didn't leave him over all the crap he already pulled on her, she wouldn't leave him if he were honest with her.

No sympathy for him at all - he's brought this on himself (not to mention the Carters and Whitney, who are the ones who DO deserve the sympathy)

I did until the robbery. Now he deserves everything that's coming to him.
I was raised to believe that stealing from your own family is among the very worst things anyone could do, so in my mind he's a total and utter scumbag. |

I do generally feel sorry for him but there are things he's done that complicate those feelings. I do think they needed to delve deeper into the psychology behind his seeming detachment from his family and their feelings during the break-in as his depression storyline has turned a bit silly since then, which is a shame.
One thing I do think is a bit unbelievable is that Mick now knows he's working at a call centre but STILL hasn't questioned how he's able to afford all this new stuff. You'd think it would have been the first question out of his mouth. But I suppose they're saving it all for a big showdown. |
