Thinking back about celebrity music deaths we had two huge ones a long time ago...

Elvis Presley 1977....
John Lennon 1980....
Freddie Mercury 1991

If we think of recent music icons who have died....Prince, Michael Jackson, David Bowie....today we had George Michael.

Now consider Madonna, Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney & Elton John....they are possibly the top 4 over aged 50 popular music icons still around.

The biggest stars left by my reckoning (in terms of contribution to rock music and popular music in general and my own tastes) are...

Paul McCartney
Bob Dylan
Stevie Wonder
Neil Young
Aretha Franklin
Mick Jagger
Keith Richards
Joni Mitchell
David Byrne
Bruce Springsteen
Iggy Pop
Diana Ross
Robert Plant
Jimmy Page
David Gilmour

Those ones spring to mind as ones people will make a big fuss about. Madonna is probably another although I'm not much of a fan of her music or see her as on the same level as those others in terms of music although she's certainly been the biggest pop star on the planet at times in her career which is something few will experience.

Neil Young is my personal favourite now Bowie and Lou Reed are gone.

I don't mean to be disrespectful but those people are not iconic.

I'd rate the following as icons of pop music:

Shirley Bassey. Still going strong. Goldfinger is one of the most amazing film tunes ever. Arguably the most powerful female voice in popular music.

Tom Jones. He looks well for his age. He was regarded as sort ot a British Elvis Presley back in the day.

ABBA - be a sad day when they depart this world. They brought a lot of pleasure to many. Perhaps the most iconic foreign pop group of all time? I would say so.

Cliff Richard - one the biggest selling UK artists of all time. He's definitely an icon.

U2. Iconic rock group from the 1980s. Perhaps not that well-known to younger people, though. Bono, the lead singer, the most famous member of the group, I guess.

Oasis - probably the most iconic rock group of the 1990s. Iconic second album too. Popularity lessened due to split but when they were big they were huge. Younger people may not rate them or know much about their music.

I think the internet makes icons of music less iconic. I think the sheer amount of music online and the fact younger people are unlikely to listen to much Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, George Michael (RIP), etc means their deaths won't have much impact on the streaming, Facebook generation. But for older people it does have an impact.

I thought Whitney Houston was a great singer and it was very sad what happened to her.

My list starts with Bob Dylan and ends with Macca.

All the rest named, while huge are just that one step below.

I was thinking of another list of shooting stars that includes Hendrix, Joplin and Jim Morrison and probably Amy Winehouse though she is not at all my cup of tea.

I wouldn't say so in a sense. A legend is a legend. I am not a big fan of most listed on this thread but I agree they are icons and legends. You can't deny the impact they made even if you are not fans. If you don't mention Madonna as one its daft, she clearly is an icon along the lines of micheal Jackson. George micheal was an icon, like it or not

Rod Stewart possibly, he was pretty iconic in his time (although enough with the bagpipe music Rod )
Elton and Macca obviously ... Jagger, Richards and Dylan. Joni and Neil Young and Kate Bush.
Stevie Wonder. James Taylor and Carole King.

I'd add Paul Weller to the list and Sting.
