I recently bought an ASUS X540LA with the intention of upgrading it with an SSD.
The machine as supplied ran like a dog with one leg. This appeared to be a combination of ASUS crapware and a very slow hard disk. So rather than just swap the disk I decided to reinstall Windows. I put the SSD in and did a fresh install from a bootable memory stick. I had intended to activate it with a Win10 Pro license key but the installation finished and showed Windows 10 Home activated, but at no point did I put in a key. I could understand if I had installed it to the original hard drive, but not to the SSD. would a license key be stored in the BIOS or on the motherboard or something ?

Yeah, the Windows 10 downloadable media from Microsoft is configured to activate automatically where possible so if the system has a license key in the BIOS already it will install that edition of Windows 10 and automatically activate.

If you particularly want / need to use Pro then you can upgrade in place by changing the product key in the activation settings to the Pro key and it will start the upgrade.

If you want to be given the choice of Home / Pro during install then there’s a file you can add to the USB stick that will cause the installer to prompt you.

Details here: http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-se...ng-windows-10/

They have a download link for the file you need to add but it’s just a very small text file (shown in the link) so you could just type it out yourself.

Thanks, that's very helpful. I'm fine with Win10 Home (it's for a friend), but now I understand it.
