I watch stuff on a usb stick in my tv. Had it a while now and I use it a lot. Lately I can be watching something and the sound totally goes. IT won't come back. If I try another show or film on the stick all have lost sound. Turn the tv off and leave it and the next day it works again. Plugging it in and out sometimes works for 10 minutes then it happens again.

Is that a sign the stick is going?

No, because a dying USB stick would not affect just the audio and leave the video untouched. It would randomly affect any data on the stick, it could not be that selective.

The thing to do is to buy a brand new stick from a reputable source, transfer some material to it and see what happens. If you get the same problem on a brand new stick then the problem is not likely to be the stick.

Alternatively try to play the files on the stick on some other device, eg your computer. That will confirm whether the files themselves and/or the stick are OK.

The files play fine on my laptop and fine again after the stick hasn't been used for a while. I bought the stick on amazon. I've just bought one today from pc world so I shall see. It seems to happen when I pause a lot which I do. Then either the sound goes out of sync or it totally goes for all files on the stick. I can plug it into my laptop and it works fine. Maybe it's the tv. Unplugging the tv from the power totally then back in works but only for a bit then it goes again but a full night with it off and it's fine again.

I cannot watch via HDMI like I used to because no matter what cable I try, how many new ones I buy that work perfectly with my laptop to our other tv it no longer works with the tv in the bedroom. It used to but then I started getting red and green pixilation and crackling sound. I've tried a different port (the one I use for sky) same issue.

The usb stick I got from amazon was a phillips one and has good reviews. It could be fake. Hopefully this new one from pc world will work properly. I went for a sandisk one.

More likely to be a codec problem. It is quite common for badly encoded files to go out of sync or not work correctly on certain devices. TVs usually only have a limited range of formats they support.

Try playing the files on a different device and/or sourcing from a different place.

Long term you are probably going to be better off with a dedicated bit of kit like a Roku or maybe a games console.

What is Roku? Something you pay for? I get everything online without paying. I have sky tv, I get US pace stuff and movies basically and put them on a usb stick.

The audio is fine but messes up after I pause a lot and suddenly the hwole sound for every file goes, even ones I watched fine before. Next day it will play through fine. I've had it a few years without this issue until recently. I suppose the only way to be sure is to try out the new stick for a while and see. Last night I watched everything no problems with no loss of sound. It's just random and affects every file when it happens.

It's not the USB stick. That doesn't know or care what the data being read of it actually is and cannot possibly cause problems reading just audio data and leave the video data alone. If the stick was faulty in some way then you would be having problems with both audio and video.

It is the TV that is having the problem so it is entirely possible you will get the same effect with any USB stick you use. The solution may be the way the files are encoded ot it could simply be inherent in the TV.

Wherever you get the files from has changed the way they encode the files and it's not working on your TV.

Paying for stuff has benefits. It works.

Been doing it for donkeys years, the stuff is 100% perfect. Paying for outdated stuff has zero benefits. Everything I get is perfect quality, I get subs for my deaf father. He plays it fine laptop to his tv.
