GTA III, Vice City & San Andreas NOT 1080 on PS4!
GTA III gave me the impression that it was more like 720, and a Youtube review of the graphics comparison seems to confirm this. A bit disappointing since I've seen the PC versions of all these, and they all offer 1080 resolution, even GTA III, and they look amazing when connected to a HDTV. San Andreas with all its counttyside environments to do rampages in is very immersive in 1080 PC graphics, and the PS2 version looked incredibly basic up against it.
Of course on the PS3, they only sold the SD versions, but on PS4 I kind of expected we might get 1080 versions, but unfortunately it seems more like it's gone halfway, at 720 resolution! Would be nice not to have to worry about your PC and installing them and have a home console 1080 experience for these games! but you can't! There was a strange Android/IPhone port of GTA San Andreas for PS3 as well that also didn't offer 1080, of course the vast majority of PS3 games were only 720, I thought that issue would be resolved with the PS4 releases of the games! It's a bit disappointing because surely the PS4 is capable of what PC graphics were back in 2002! At least Final Fantasy VII wasn't 1080 and so the PS4 version is more or less bang on what the PC version offered, it all looks crisper and a bit more detailed and that's it! As Final Fantasy IX came out on Steam this year, would be nice to see that version coming to PS4 and Final Fantasy VIII's PC version too! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zot1565hbfk&t=2s |

It's not a matter of "what the PS4 is capable of".
The PC version was built for PCs. The PS4 version is actually the original PS2 game running under emulation. The emulator renders the game at 1280x896 (double the original and higher than the 720p you suggested) and then upscales the rest of the way to 1080p. If Rockstar had decided on a full remaster, with a new version of the game built specifically for PS4 then native 1080p wouldn't have been an issue. But that's not the route they took. |

The games need more than a new lick of paint.
SA is one of my favourite games of all-time but it has aged badly. The glitches, the old save system, losing your weapons, the terrible auto-aim... I'd love to see an actual remaster like what Naughty Dog are doing with Crash, but I don't think we ever will. I'll stick to my memories. |

I'd rather have a new GTA game. I'm fed up of remakes.
GTA III has been ported to the PS3, PS4, mobile, PC. It's getting stupid. |

The Xbox re-releases that followed the PS2 have been the only ones that allowed you to play your own music too, although that was in the PC versions, thought that might have been possible on the PS4 too! Console gaming is so you can just switch something on and have it play, more faff with the PC version with crashes and endless problems but great for customisation such as that time I downloaded a level editor and made a road that went miles up in the sky above Liberty City, but will seemingly always remain the best graphical experience for these games! Does anyone know if it's possible to download and install a fully done game save file for GTA III on PS4 so I can do some rampages, can't be bothered to actually play through it all again! |

No and of course therefore simply isn't good as it could be.
720 or half HD resolution, is 1280x720 so it's only a tad better than this! Half HD? What on earth are you on about? 720p is HD. |

I don't personally class it is as such, I've always called it half HD or HalfD, it's about halfway between full SD & full HD. Roughly the same resolution as used by those so called "HD Ready" TV's, they are not "Full HD". The GTA games on PS4 are not "Full HD" games, however they are on PC!
SD - 720x576 HalfHD - 1280x720 HD (2k) - 1920x1080 4k - 3840x2160 |

Using this logic most PS3 games were not HD.
It's semantics because 720 is still called HD, it's just a personal preference that I only call 1080 HD, and 720 Half HD or HalfD. Things in 720 resolution look a bit softer and not as pin sharp on a 1080 TV but still quite a big improvement over full SD. I've certainly always thought it a bit of a con to describe TV's in this resolution as "HD Ready" TV's. The PS3 is a device which is capable of putting out 1080, when playing Blu-Ray video, or MP4 files encoded with a resolution of "1920x1080", when viewing HD video on Netflix or Amazon Prime, but the vast majority of its game library was only at 720 resolution, I kind of naively assumed that the main benefit of PS4 was going to be that pretty much everything was now going to be in full HD, and I didn't expect any less of the classic GTA games, given that they played at this resolution even back in 2002, so I don't think it's good enough on the PS4 to be honest! GTA III is an old game, but is an old game that's actually available in 1080 if you use the PC version, so I really do think we should have got that on the PS4. It's a shame I was looking forward to really immersive countryside graphics from San Andreas on the PS4 looking as good as the PC version, seems like I'll stick with PC gaming and have to do without the console convenience! 720 resolution? It could have been better be honest! |

What you personally class it as is irrelevant. 720p (1280x720) is an HD broadcast standard. And the game in question is higher than that.
Incidentally for the Steam release of Final Fantasy IX for the PC which was very welcome after years of not having a PC version at all and the game being exclusive to PS1 there were some of the same complaints, there had been no original HD source for FFIX unlike GTA III, however it was known that Square actually had HD sources for all the "stages" or whatever you might call them but obviously had to downgrade these to SD resolution for the PS1!, however in the PC Steam release the only graphic upgrades were the character models, text boxes and menus and the like and not all the world imagery etc, the FFIX PC developer did not take advantage of the HD sources they could have and merely upscaled what was used in the PS1 version! Playing GTA III on PS4 feels a bit like being cheated in the same way, with some extra effort we could have had a brilliant looking version of this game, the PS4 is more than capable of it and they most definitely have the source material for it in GTA III as the PC version shows! I'm not sure why everyone on the thread is so laid back, GTA III is a game that really deserves HD visuals and it's actually got them, we just need them programmed! I'm understandably a bit miffed because I've bought these already in SD on the PS3 and so I expected a bit more of an upgrade than this on the PS4! When Steam comes up with some sort of hardware console, then it'll be bollocks to the PS4 and the Xbox One etc, because we can have the best graphics on everything and not worry about some of the PC headaches such as crashes, drivers etc, one reason why it could be nice to have the PS4 just take care of all that, but we need developers to program to the full potential, if older games are in HD make an effort to release them as that! https://blogjob.com/oneangrygamer/20...cs-comparison/ |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XewLlTF9Yw - I did some footage with Fraps myself at 1080 but can't find it, but in this you can see how crisp it looks, this is how we want to see GTA III on PS4! Looks rather basic when stacked up against GTA V, lack of overall detail but is still a very immersive 3D world and sharp as heck in 1080!

It's not so much the not available in 1080p issue that annoys me, but the fact that Vice City and San Andreas have songs omitted. The soundtracks were a big part of those games so to have the audacity to charge full price when the game isn't complete, is unacceptable.
I will however be downloading GTA III, at least that has all the music. As impressive as the PC versions look, it loses a few effects from the original PS2 versions. Best way to play these games, (other than on an old 32" CRT with the PS2 hooked up) is modding the PC versions to look more like they did on PS2, but with 1080p, crisp graphics and better quality. Here's the 'Enhanced Edition' mod for San Andreas. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfil.../?id=382803643 |

GTA III was mostly original music, which was great as they even had original pop songs on Head Radio & Lips 106 stations, it was only the songs on Flashback FM (from Scarface soundtrack) and a couple of others that were non original, on Vice City & San Andreas however they started licensing a lot of pop music, now it seems they are too tight to include these in the resellings of these games for licence reasons or whatever it is! |

It's a shame i won't be able to replay these on the console with trophies support, but that's life! |
