The new character/assistant - Bill (crazy name for a woman, huh!) looks straight out of a CBBC show. She looks as if she's going to be a bit annoying asking loads of questions and we're gonna have the new in-joke:

"Doctor What?"

"No, people ususally say Who."

"What? You're Doctor What or Doctor Who?"

Blah blah blah!

Yes, I'm sure many 'adult' fans will be gnashing their teeth and proclaiming next series as "worst ever!" Yep, Doctor Who is gonna go full on CBBC mode!

Moffat is still headwriter did you expect the dialogue to be a perfect representation of how people talk in real life?

I think she looks brilliant so far. Great chemistry with Capaldi in the one scene and the small fragments we've seen, and I just generally like her style. She seems a lot of fun to be honest. Bring on asBill!

Grumpy old professor meets the niggling over-excited girl. I think it'll make a good match.

Exactly! I think it'll work well because Capaldi's Doctor is 'grumpy exterior, yippee-ai-yay beneath the surface'. And then Bill has the potential to be a over excited but actually really inquisitive woman that bounces off that brilliantly. The kind of friendship nobody could have seen working and then it does.

Well, it's to be hoped anyway

I'm remaining optimistic at this point. Hopefully she can't be any worse than Clara.

Well I loved Clara, though I don't want Bill to be anything like her. I've liked all the companions more or less...Amy and Rory were the ones I cared about least and even they were likeable enough.

As usual I will always give Dr Who a chance but much as I enjoyed the Christmas special, the trailer left me feeling a but "urgh" If those were the best bits they could show of the new companion Bill, then I'm not impressed.Much as I love Capoldi as the Doctor, to quote a well known character, "I have a bad feeling about this"

I don't. I'm optimistic right now.

Firstly, I think the addition of Nardole is a genius move. A popular actor, playing a very unconventional companion.

Secondly, there's all this talk of taking the show back to basics. Also a very good choice IMO.

Thirdly, even if it doesn't turn out good, it's not a catastrophic disaster, because a regime change is just around the corner anyway.

Bill seems like the perfect choice for the personality of a new companion. I hope she is basically as she seems, so far. Fun, inquisitive, a little mad! What she doesn't need, at all, is a mess of a complicated backstory...

What made characters like Rose and Martha work so well? Well, for a start, they were normal girls living perfectly normal lives until aliens appear to turn it all upside down.

Bill and everything in the trailer just seemed to be go back to the basics which definitely isn't a bad thing.

Get back to the non mysterious human companion stumbling into trouble with The Doctor and having fun. With Nardole which i think could definitely work, i've been wanting a multiple companion crew as for me they work better.

I am appalled at the prospect.

I'll grant you Matt Lucas is popular with them as like him but there are a lot of people, including myself, who find him incredibly irritating.

Equally I expect it says something about acting on his passport and cv but I can't recall him giving anything like a decent performance.

As for Nardole promising to make sure the Doctor is all right - really? And some people moaned about Clara taking too much on herself.

PS I still don't understand how the Doctor excavated a head from a machine which had been destroyed in a meteor storm/starship crash, grew it a replacement body and inserted a replica personality - let alone why he would want to, what with it being Nardole and all. But then I am almost past worrying about such stuff.

My elder son was delivered by a midwife, called Bill - and she was definitely a woman. I assumed that her birth name was Wilhemina. This sort of thing is not exactly unknown.

I would suggest waiting to see a few actual episodes before making too many observations.

Did you see him as Thenardier in Les Mis?

The machine wasn't destroyed. If you watch the ending of THORS you see that it and Nardole's head are perfectly fine.

The Christmas special had quite a lot of adult humour actually.

Mea culpa. You are correct.

I was obviously in denial at this revolting development.

Nope.

I do however remember Alun Armstrong - which would be one reason why I am not willing to part with good money to see the movie.

PS Lest anybody be about to ask I have also avoiding seeing Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd or Meryl Streep in Into the Woods save for a quick clip of the former (which wasn't quick enough).

You can see the movie quite safely. Sasha Baron Cohen played the part in that. Johnny Depp won a Golden Globe for Sweeney Todd (deservedly in my opinion). Agree about Into the Woods. Dire film.

I've seen Len Cariou, Alun Armstrong, Denis Quilley, Michael Ball and Bryn Terfel as Sweeney. IMHO all of them can sing better than Depp and at least three of them are better actors. He is however good looking.

OTW I would rather watch Matt Lucas than Sasha Baron Cohen.

Bilitis -> Bill?
Honorificabilitudinitatibus -> Bill?

The possibilities are finite but numerous.

Maybe she was born in Billericay. Maybe her mother was bilious throughout pregnancy.
