When I was younger I remember Christmas lasting for a week, Now it seems as soon as Christmas day is over, Christmas is finished. Music channels which think it's fine to play Christmas songs none stop from the start of November vanish as soon as the clock strikes 12 on Boxing day, Just went to the local shop, all the decorations are down and the staff informed me head office have told them to pack Christmas away and get the Easter eggs out !! Who on earth wakes up on Boxing day and thinks "oooo I must buy my Easter eggs today"

What gets me is the people who think Boxing Day would be a great day to go and buy a sofa or other such nonsense. As far as I'm concerned nothing productive is to be done between 24th and 27th December

The music channels..."Now Xmas" is still there, all the music channels that had Christmassy DOGs in the run up to Christmas still have them up today.

Other TV channels are still showing special programmes.

Some smaller shops may taken their decorations down, but the major retailers still have all their decorations up and and still playing Christmas songs. High streets still have their Christmas lights on.

I can't think of anything I'd rather do less today than queue up outside Bluewater at 7am to buy a load of tat I wouldn't have touched this time last week.

I'm back at work on weds so this is my well earned day of doing sweet fa in my pjs

I think you've just grown up!

As kids we had 2 weeks off school and Christmas seemed to last for ever. As adults it's usually just a couple of days off work and then back to normal.

Just nipped down to the shops and the traffic is like a normal day. Thought it would be a lot quieter.

Exactly.

The only sale shopping I plan to do is online and even then the offers aren't particularly great.

I see no reason why people need to rush out and shop on boxing day. They only have a limited amount of money which can only be spent once so when it's gone, it's gone. The big chains seem blind to the fact that a customer spending £1000 on a television at 9pm on a Sunday boxing day then won't be back to spend more at 3 PM the following Saturday. The shop I worked for used that twisted logic and couldn't understand why weekdays and Saturdays were now quieter. We still took the same money but over 7 days not 6 obviously meaning more money on wages, heating, lighting and everything else.

The only shops that should be open boxing day and new years day are the small independent / franchise shops to give them a fair chance to get customers. I'm sure Tesco, ASDA, Sainsburys, Morrison's, Co-op and the rest could quite happily survive.

Where I live, the small franchise shop IS the Co-op!

I didn't know the Co-op did franchises. Certainly around here in a 6 mile radius there are 5 Co-op food stores. They are certainly giving Tesco / One Stop a run for their money who have about 8 (including 2 big stores)

The shop I worked in took all the decorations down on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. It especially annoyed me because it was always my turn to do it with the same people claiming if I do it this year they will do it next time.

The other excuse was "it's a man's job" ignoring the fact the display team who put them up were all women.
Obviously this sexism didn't extend to cleaning or tea making.

OP has a point.

I've noted through my previous job that those that do not work, xmas lasts a week or so. Those in work, its usally a day.
Today, some of family are at work, doctors, nurses, police offices, a couple that work as managers in the food sector and couple in the transport sector, so it is just about a day for the hard working lot.

Shops taking decorations down before boxing day is nothing new, I remember as a child going on to woolies on Christmas eve and the decs had been taken down. It may finish early for the shops but who leads their life by what the shops do, if we did we'd be eating Easter eggs in January and having bbqs in February.

Oh I don't know, hub was very productive today, and got a load of books for me via various Online sites, which I find very exciting, and when they all arrive I'll be getting more books Christmas might feel like Christmas then One book is coming from the US! Wouldn't mind a high backed sofa but no room for it, and it wouldn't get up the stairs!

Maybe because it feels like Christmas already lasts for a fecking month and a half before Dec 25!

Go work in retail and have Christmas music playing nonstop on a loop all day for weeks on end and then tell me you want it to continue after the 25. I don't blame people at all for putting the tat away asap.
