May I suggest you get yourself a bible and learn about Christmas? A prime example of ignorance. Merry Christmas.

A very select few were. Our local Odeon is often pretty empty on an average Saturday night so it certainly wouldn't be commercially viable to open Christmas Day.

The Bible doesn't mention Christmas.

What were the takings in Christmas Day then? How many staff did they have on?

I know that. I'm talking about larger shops outside the present law.
Oh okay, I haven't read the whole thread sorry.

You said it wasn't commercially viable with an air of certainty. I assumed you did know.

It was only a select few cinemas that opened and Odean would have done their research to see which ones were viable to open from a business POV. I know that a lot more places in the US open on Christmas Day but it's not the big festival there it is here and most people there are back to work on Boxing Day which isn't a bank holiday in most states |

Someone I know when to the gym early on Christmas morning. I was shocked that the gym was even open on Christmas Day!

It's a pretty safe assumption tbh and your post didn't come across as anything other than that.

I know that a lot more places in the US open on Christmas Day but it's not the big festival there it is here and most people there are back to work on Boxing Day which isn't a bank holiday in most states no, it's bigger! 75% of Americans attend church at Christmas. It's a far more religious country than we are. And Boxing Day is a holiday in zero states. It doesn't exist there. I am not sure where you get your information from?

Christmas Day is on par with hallowe'en in the US. A one day event. I know folks in the US who were packing all decorations away yesterday which is common apparently

Went to Sainsburys Corner Shop, they couldn't get Christmas signage down quick enough.
But what a society. I recall local Indian Corner Shop used to sell Boxing Day papers. Shut at 2pm. Sainsburys closed at 9pm! I know many don't celebrate, but think 75% to 80% of British do celebrate. We actually have a holiday tomorrow, what will those shoppers do then? I worry within my working life we will see shops open on Christmas Day. |

I work in Retail and when the tins of Cadbury Roses and Heroes etc start appearing in August it's little wonder by Christmas Eve they start to remove signage/decorations etc!
IMHO that's part of the problem-it starts far too early and by the time it actually comes around people are fed up to the back teeth of it all. Having said that a few weeks ago I visited my old work place and they've already got Creme Eggs on sale. I know Mondelez have said it's down to consumer demand but I'm sorry.... that's just sad! |

Totally agree! I work for a big supermarket that starts with A, and as soon as Boxing Day hits, everything Christmassy goes out the window. I find it rather depressing because what happened to the twelve days of Christmas?! At least keep things Christmassy until New Year's Day!

Today is supposed to be Christmas Day (observed) but no one is observing it... The streets are packed with shoppers

I must admit I was surprised to see the bins getting collected today in my area.

I think Christmas is still a week long event for most people, with the final blow out on new years eve. The in between days are spent visiting the family, playing with new toys, getting drunk, watching xmas specials on tv, and just chilling out.
It does however seem less people leave their decs up till the 12th night these days with most opting for January 1st or 2nd. Back in the 80's it was unheard of for anyone to take them down earlier. Then again it was unheard of for anyone to put them up in November. Personally I think Christmas should start from the 1st of December to its end with NYE being the conclusion of it all and a welcome into the next year.

Exactly. Our NY office are always back to work as normal on Boxing Day as Christmas is a one day celebration for them. Thanksgiving is a much bigger event than Christmas for them and they're done now.

IMO, it's Christmas as long as the RI Christmas Lectures are on the telly box.
