This is the thing, people think Christmas is over after Christmas day because the Christmas adverts aren't on anymore and you don't hear Mariah Carey or whoever on the radio. But most of us still have our trees up and are munching away on turkey and chocolate and spending time with family and friends.

I think a big part of it is some people love it so much they cant bear to see it end, so they strip the decorations etc prematurely. A bit like when someone dies and you chuck out all their stuff 2 days later.

I put our tree up on the 18th and I have the urge to take it down. I know I should wait until 12th night but I want my house back to normal. We don't have anything else planned now either as we did it all before Christmas this year. If we still had Christmas things to do I would probably keep it up though.

When I worked in retail about 15 years ago, the shop would shut about an hour earlier than normal and we'd spend an hour taking down Xmas things and putting up New Year's Sales banners

So it's not a new thing and having endured Christmas since early November we were kind of happy to take off the Xmas Music off the the Store Music System

When I lived in the US it wasn't unusual to see an Xmas tree on the kerbside Xmas Day Night, especially if the refuse pickup was scheduled for the next day meaning the one after would be a week away

People think Christmas is over the day after Christmas Day because they're a bit dim to be honest.

The local shops have taken down the decorations.

Always seems a bit sad that when we come into the office next Tuesday out first tasks will be to take down the tree and decorations and put them away in the store room for another 11 months

I was just in Tesco and surprisingly they still had their Christmas banners hanging from the roof. Nothing that specifically says "Christmas", but things like giant snowflakes and gingerbread men. It was good to see.

Let me guess, they had them up because it's still er Christmas? If I recall, they take their decorations down on January 1st. Still to early. But there we go.

Since the late '80s and early '90s.

Sunday opening, Bank Holiday opening and multiple TV and radio channels have increased the hours we work and given us more time to spend in the shops.

As a result family time is compromised. Welcome to the 21st century.

So they're dim because they don't follow the Christian ideas about the holiday? Many people celebrate a more secular Christmas, so they can decide for themselves when it's over. Christmas has been a mishmash of many cultural and religious celebrations/observations for a long time. Christians do not "own" it or get to decide how others celebrate it.

Yup as I said, on Xmas Eve our shop would close a couple of hours early but we had to stay to take down the decorations and put up the Sales signs

There are also many people who are sick to the back teeth of it dragging on and can't wait to get back to normal.
These days, most people take the decorations down before 12th night as it all looks a bit wrong once new year is here.

OP definitely has a point. I've seen Easter stuff already and a lot of the decorations have come down and been replaced with Sale signs which only used to happen in January. We're always being hurried up now ... it's depressing. We don't live in the moment.
During the run up we get Christmas rammed down our throats ... come Boxing Day it's all but over. It did used to last longer and the shops and businesses were closed for longer too.
It'll be all fitness and dieting soon. Ugh .. we're being fast forwarded and encouraged to have the attention span of a gnat.

If you feel that Christmas should last longer than it feel it does, then do it. Just because some local shops have decided to take down their decorations doesn't mean that you have to follow them or lose the Christmas spirit..They're a business so they will do whatever to reign in the money.

That said it you feel that Christmas is long enough, then do that too.

I'll go along with this. I feel Christmas should last until the slog back to reality - the full return to work/school/college/uni/etc - kicks in. Luckily for me most of the shops around me that had the decorations up before Christmas still has them up there, plus there is still the Christmas specials on TV, radio, etc.

Its not like that in London either.

For many, not including myself, Christmas is just one day. I know of a few people that have already taken down their tree.

For me, Christmas lasts a week & I intend to keep it that way.

The convenience shops are open Christmas day & every other day of the year where I live, many of them are actually open 24 hours a day.

Only shops over 3000 square feet are affected by Christmas day opening legislation.

You will find (in London especially) many convenience shops, restaurants, Ripleys...are actually open on Christmas Day as they aren't affected by the rule.

Mine haven't. They still have a Christmas tree and a few decorations hanging up in the shop. Not much left in the line of Christmas food though apart from a few leftovers but no Easter stuff yet either.

I have been moaning for years about just how obvious retailers have become , ok in some streets that have them the lights will still be up and in shopping centres the decs will still be up inside the communal areas but in the actual stores and this is mainly the large chains Christmas decs are being taken down before they finish work on the 24th and the sale signs put up, all signs of Christmas are gone for the few that make much effort these days , they have become much less over the years.

Now we know they want sales we know the 25th is Christmas day but surely they could leave the decs up until New Years day, the whole period is Christmas and I am sure the kids whilst being dragged round shopping would be happier if it was still Christmassy.

But whilst we know that of course they want our money and that is what they are there for do they have to be so blatant that they could not give a stuff about the season people are now in that they have been shoving down our throats.

I find it all very sad really. From 1st November we are bombarded with adverts kicking of with DFS and this continues right through until 5pm on Christmas Eve, retailers trying to sell us a dream that this Christmas will be fantastic. Then they drop us like a sack of shit on Christmas Eve and it's onto the sales.. it's like a middle finger, we sucked you in again and you fell for it ha ha and Christmas is forgot about.
