Replacing a battery on an iPhone 6 Plus

I'm noticing after over two years the battery life on my 6 Plus is now quite poor and at times quite unpredictable.

Having bought the phone outright and still being very pleased with it I'd like to keep the phone and am considering getting a new battery fitted.

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend either a DIY kit or the Apple service.

Where did you buy it from originally?

If it's Apple I would probably book a Genius Bar appointment and then mention consumer law. They may well repair it for free.

Batteries are considered consumable parts and they definitely won't replace it for free after two years, I believe the limit on free battery replacement is closer to 6 months.

The problem with batteries is if you buy cheap then likely to be crap. Work well for a while and then suffer from problems. Best not going for the cheapest option.

If you have never done mobile phone repairs it can be daunting and if you mess up then it can get expensive. There is a guide here,

Its worth checking your local phone stalls at markets, shopping centres, etc Most only charge 10 to 20 quid for the labour and it will probably do a better job than you.

The battery in an iPhone is integral to the device and cannot be considered to be a consumable item.

They might label the battery to be a consumable under their warranty but they cannot escape their consumer law obligations if you've purchased from them, and to be fair to Apple they don't try to either. The device as a whole must be fit for purpose and last for a reasonable period of time.

I had my iPhone 6 exchanged for a refurbished unit at 23 months old at an Apple store after the battery performance had dropped quite a bit over a few months.

They will run a diagnostic on the battery and if it is holding less than 50% of it's original capacity they will replace it no questions asked within 2 years if purchased from them.

After 2 years they won't replace it for free but it's still worth having them take a look at it as you may be able to get a discounted replacement if it's only just outside 2 years.

I'd consider just paying Apple to do it. The problem with a DIY or third party job is that you're not sure where the battery came from, whether it is genuine Apple, or whether it is truly brand new (it might be recycled).

I'm not sure how the 6 plus is constructed but modern phones are designed to be virtually impossible to take apart properly - everything will be glued together, or constructed in such a way that it is very easy to cause irreparable damage.

I don't know if Apple allows its AASPs to do iPhone work.

Appreciate the advice. As the phone is over two years old and it will be the first time I've attempted such a thing, along with concerns about the quality of third party batteries, I think a replacement at Apple may be my best bet.

details on apples policy, you can check with them but I would very surprised if you were covered after 2 years,

That's pretty reasonable if it extends the life of the phone by a year or two. I don't think there's anything defective with it, just overuse over a couple of years!

Sounds right, had our iPhone 6S battery replaced and on the paper work it said £59, but that's obviously a smaller capacity battery than a plus model. Didn't have to pay though as it was done on their repair programme since it was built in the months where the battery's were defective!

I don't care about links I'm telling you that I got an email shortly after dropping our 6S off at the Apple Store to have the battery replaced. It said service record and gave details of what was happening with the phone then under that it said "battery replacement kit £57.50". So actually less than the figure I gave above(which was off the top of my head)

Unless of course that figure was without VAT. Plus the above said "out of warranty" perhaps my 6S was counted as in warranty because of the battery issue? And that's why the cost was less?
