Can't delete folder
I have an empty folder in Windows 7 which refuses to delete, and displays a message saying that I must have the administrator's permission.
I am the only user of the PC, and therefore the administrator, but I don't know what to do to tell the folder that permission is granted. |

It is an oddity of Windows that even an Administrator user does not have full Administrator privileges. If you know the full path name for the folder then you could use an Administrator command prompt to delete the folder.
On the start menu there may be an Administrator Command Prompt option or right click on the Command Prompt entry and select Run as Administrator. Then use the RD or RMDIR command to try and delete the folder. See http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...nd-prompt.html Just use the instructions in step 2 in the "here's how" section. |

If all else fails you could try Unlocker - http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/unlocker.html

Was there a file deletion tool in Malwarebytes Free ? I don't see it in the present version. I don't see the option in Avira and can't think of any other program that I've used.
I think it was Malwarebytes but the foggy festive brain is not sure. |

Another option would be to use a rescue CD.
Avira provide a free one. Very useful. Boot from the cd and you can browse all folders and files. Remove the offending item. Used this myself recently and would recommend. |

Hope the following would help you:
1.Right click the folder you are trying to delete. 2.Click Properties 3.Select the 'Previous Versions' tab. You should see multiple versions of the same folder name from days or weeks prior. These are basically automatic backups that were taken in the background. 4.Select an older version of the folder that you want to delete under the 'Previous Versions' tab. 5.Click 'Restore' button. You will see a warning that the folder will be restored and will overwrite the existing folder. If this is okay, then... 6.Click 'Yes' to restore the folder when prompted. 7.Right click the folder and select Delete once it has been restored. This procedure repopulates the empty folder that you could not delete. Then you you'll be able to delete. |

Thank you, everyone, for your help with this. In the end, I had to take the hidden folder option as I couldn't make any of the others work - not even unblocker. My son-in-law tried yesterday, and was defeated by it, and there isn't much that he doesn't know about computers! Trouble is, we ended up with a padlock icon on the folder, which made the whole thing that much more difficult.
Thank you all for your help. Ian J |
