I was only just reading the thread about the Christmas Eve episode of The Royal Family. Someone had posted on there that the BBC may not be aware that she was very ill in hospital and that had they known, they may not have aired the episode.
I was reading it less than a minute ago ! RIP Liz |

FFS I know it's a cliche at this point but so many British pop culture icons are dying this year..,
Absolutely frigging outstanding as Nana. To paraphrase from Norma Jean Speakman, 'Liz Smith, may she rest in peace'... |

She must have the rare distinction of being the only actress to be killed off in two British sitcoms.

Never saw her in Royle Family but loved her in Vicar Of Dibley and 2.4 Children.
But I honestly thought she died a few years ago. |

2016 isn't letting up right to the end.
Very sad news. She was a fabulous actress. She's had a damn good innings though |

She was very old so it's not unexpected.

I thought she had died a few years back too, then realised I was confusing her with Elizabeth Spriggs.

RIP a great actress, loved her as Nana she reminded me of my own Grandma in the Royle Family, i hope she can live to 95 like Liz Smith did as it is a fantastic age to reach. It is hard to believe she didn't start acting until she was 49 or 50 as she seemed to have been around forever. RIP a sad loss.

I was happy to see her pop up 'recently' in an episode of The Tunnel which I only discovered in the past couple of months as I thought she'd retired long back.
Sad, but she had a long life, so I hope she felt she'd fulfilled her life well. My favourite roles of hers were Bette and Belle in 2point4 Children, Letitia in The Vicar of Dibley and her role in Keeping Mum. I might have some tarasalamata and chocolate sandwiches in her honour tomorrow. |

A fabulous actress. It doesn't make her death any less sad, but at least she lived to 95 and enjoyed a full, prosperous career right to the end.
Thank you for the laughter, Liz. |

'Nana' in so many things to me growing up in the 90s.
95, not a bad age at all, she had a fine career and made lots of people happy. God bless you Liz Smith! |

95 is a good age. I will always remember Nanna asking Antony's new girlfriend Emma (Sheridan Smith) who was a vegetarian whether she could have some wafer thin ham!. As a vegetarian from a young age I had similar experiences so it made me smile.
Great actress.

I met her a few years ago in Camden. She was so so funny and such a lovely lady. She was brilliant in A Private Function. Stole the movie and deservedly won the BAFTA for her performance. Sad day. R.I.P.
