I met her a few years ago in Camden. She was so so funny and such a lovely lady. She was brilliant in A Private Function. Stole the movie and deservedly won the BAFTA for her performance. Sad day. R.I.P.

What a wonderful varied career from an impressive effortless actress. I couldn't stand The Royle Family but she came to that show in her mid 80s - she had a lifetime of work before that......http://m.imdb.com/name/nm0809131/fil...?ref_=m_nmfm_1

My first memory of Liz Smith, goes back to the 1970's in a situation comedy series called ''I Didn't Know You Cared'' - written by Peter Tinniswood. She played the part of Annie and in the cast was Stephen Rae, Robin Bailey, John Comer and Gretchen Franklin.
I remember she got into acting quite late - I think she was in her 40's. She was one of those great jobbing actresses, who were always in demand. She will be surely missed. She reached a grand age of 95. Condolences to her family. R. I. P. |

A national treasure, who struggled for many years but overcame a lousy start in life with great talent and a fabulous sense of humour. She will be missed.
RIP Liz.

Yes read that on the thread on Christmas Eve after the repeat aired, and now hearing she died on Christmas Eve. She was a great comedy actress. RIP
Reminds me of when BBC3 aired an episode of Family Guy were Robin Williams attempts suicide, then half an hour later the news broke... |

I am glad that someone else remembers her wonderful performance as Maggie Smith's Mum in Private Functions, Liz and Maggie were a great team!

Aw no. Fantastic character actress. Good age but very sad all the same. The 'Queen of Sheba' is no more. RIP, Liz.

Just reading about her now, I completely forgot that she'd appeared in the 2005 film 'Charlie and The Chocolate Factory'

Really sad. I first saw her in a children's show about pirates, then on The Queen's Nose. Her performances always stuck with me as a child, and then of course she became famous for The Royle Family.

Liz Smith was one of those brilliant, under-rated character actors who you were always pleased to see. She had a difficult early life and didn't start acting professionally till she was 50. She appeared in so many films, plays and TV shows it would be impossible to list them all. What a long life she had though. RIP Liz Smith. x

A truly brilliant character actress, she stole the show for me as Nana in the Royle Family, and was equally fantastic as Letitia Cropley in The Vicar of Dibley; it's a humongous shame her character was written out so early on. The terms legend and national treasure ones thrown around far too often nowadays, but they really did apply to Liz Smith. RIP Liz x
