The tone of that really was pretty off. The newsreader looked pretty embarrassed.

BBC can't help themselves it seems. And I say that as someone who liked George Michael.

He was a big name, it's a quiet time news-wise, so these things always seem a little OTT.

Ben has been on the News Channel for much of the evening (including hosting the paper reviews which I'd imagine require quite a lot of off air work by the presenter) so may have not had the normal opportunities to read/tweak the script to his particular style which may have caused him to look slightly uncomfortable.

Yet another thread of moaning because a news bulletin covers a big story and someone gets their back up....
Really wish there was a vomit emoji for these! Bring on the downvoting!!!

Due to the day it was always going to come across as over the top. Not much else was going on.

1) It's Christmas, very little of note generally happens.

2) All other media outlets were running the same stories.

3) He was a musical icon for many

4) He was a secret philanthropist

5) He died way before his time.

The Workd does not stop 25th Dec.
Eastern Europe Orthodox nations celebrate Christmas in about two weeks.
Billions in the World are Muslim.

It appears quiet as half the journalists are with family or getting drunk.

Even the quality newspapers have less pages and loads of pre planned fillers.

And a large part of UK news is made up of political matters and business-related events.

The politicians are on their break, the world's financial markets are closed, and large parts of UK industry/business have closed for an extended Christmas/New Year break.

Sky News were covering a few different stories the BBC weren't covering, but it is a slow news period.

Shouldn't that have been "as bad as when Bowie died"?

It wasn't so much George Michaels Death being the main Headline.

But the newsreader looked totally pissed off anyway

The news channel got a bit annoying spending so much time on George Michael and THEN continuing the half hour reviews of the year at half past the hour.

If they wanted to dedicate quite do much time to this icon it might have been an idea to postpone these year in review segments.

Will you say that when the Queen dies?

1/ I watched these, the newscaster was serious as they reported someone passing away, not embarrassed in any way, not pissed off in anyway, both made up to support this limp thread.

2/ Every paper for two days have had extensive coverage of George Michael passing, as well as a pop star, he undertook many unknown generous acts of kindness, working as a volunteer, also giving money to people in need. Looking at BBC News website, on most read, he has been Top or typically very high in the most read section, indicating a lot of genuine interest from most of the public.

Will people be similarly annoyed about the Carrie Fisher coverage?

I actually agree with your sentiments, but the way in which you comment is appalling. People can start threads on whatever they wish, not just what you want people to start threads on. Moreover, your comments are merely opinion not fact (despite your efforts to make them appear factual). We don't know if the newsreader was pissed off, because there's no way of telling. Some people thought she was, others think she wasn't. Nobody is right, and nothing has been "made up".

Your obvious and continued defence of the BBC in every little aspect is leading to rudeness to other users, who have done nothing wrong.

At least with her, Liz Smith and Richard Adams, it should draw some of the attention away from him. Must be like a dream for some news people, three famous people and a pop singer all dying within a couple of days.

So do many wealthy people, would not be surprised if some of the millionaires hated by the Leftie Luvvies have also given plenty of money to good causes.

I'm not really into this grief porn although i'm pleased to see George was a kind thoughtful man, although saddened that he was seemingly too modest to let others know of his kindness whilst alive.

I didn't care for his music, his personal life (that the same press in mourning invaded many times in his heyday) or anything about him at all, but those who wish to honour one of their heroes, influences and inspirations should be allowed to do so.

I am pleased that unlike Bowie, MTV are only offering blanket coverage on two of their channels as opposed to all eight, so it gives chance to those who enjoyed his music to do so whilst those who don't can enjoy something else.

He always seemed a man fighting his own personal battles but many of todays attention seeking, money grabbing pop stars could learn a lot in humility from George, it seems.

All the press attention will die down, it always does.

Thing is if somebody famous who died was given less coverage than another who had passed away some would probably complain about that.

Its a double edge sword for the media in a way.

Sometimes I feel for the family who suddenly have their own private grief thrown into the open.

It really isn't a major deal. It's a quiet period for news and if filling a bulletin with George Michael's unexpected death is what viewers want to see, then so be it.

Other news providers are available.
