RTE are on 252 not 162. Which frequency are you talking about here?

I was listening to France Inter on 162KHz yesterday afternoon in the car.

It is due to be closed at the end of this year, though it hasn't been confirmed.

Not sure if the OP has had one too many slices of Christmas cake, but 162 kHz is very much alive and kicking this morning.

I did listen at midnight CET last night as there had been reports that 26th Dec would indeed see its closure, but it carried on happily; so presumably the switch off will be on 31st Dec?

There is a scheduled maintenance break on Tuesdays 0005 to 0355 UTC. Last night was no exception.
Had you checked 5 minutes later it would have been off.

Ah - that will be it. I'd forgotten about that. How very French though, to make sure it's working properly when it's switched off!

How very odd ! Perhaps they were checking the switch isn't jammed for the final switch off !

It's being switched off on Saturday 31st, according to this DXer:

In addition to tuning into 162 Khz I was going thro the band listening to see what also was there and RTE1 was not suffering interference from Algeria (my location Derby) as I band- scanned.
I also tuned up thro MW frees to see if any trans-Atlantic dx was available but nothing at the time.

@ Phil - incidentally, I unreservedly withdraw my wild allegation about your having had too many slices of Christmas cake. Your explanation as to the remark about 252 kHz now makes things clear.

I'm in Derby too
Phil. Have you ever had transatlantic DX? My understanding is we are too far from the coast.

I have not really dx'd seriously here in Derby but back in the early 70's in Bristol heard lots of transatlantic stations and recorded a fair few of them and still have the cassettes
somewhere with the evidence. It was an old 6 valve KB radio that I used then with a wire aerial dangling out of my 3rd floor window. They usually started to come in about 2 am when a lot of the continentals had shut down.

Eddie Mair on PM today did a short piece on the loss of the French Shipping Forecast due to the closure of Long Wave at the end of today's programme. Included part of a forecast from the Nineties.

Was listening to PM when that came up. How long will it be before a similar item for 198Kz?

Interesting they have had only 350 complaints (so far) of which 70% are from Belgium. 3% of the French population who can't get FM will have to use internet. DAB+ covers a part of Paris where FM reception is poor.

Well they can (and will) ignore the Belgians.

So if they have only received 105 valid complaints from a country the size of France that just demonstrates how defunct the Long Wave platform is. They will be wondering why they didn't do this years ago!

Somehow I think that the BBC would get a few more complaints, not from people necessarily who rely on Long Wave, but from the enthusiasts (such as inhabit this forum!) who would organise to kick up a stink for the hell of it or because they'd have nothing to tune their vintage valve sets to.....

That article explains that FI was audible on the South of England, but I can hear it well into the Midlands.

I shall miss it as I often listen in the car. Europe 1 on 183KHz and RTL on 234KHz can be received too.

I wonder how many complaints they had from the UK?

As with Belgian complaints British complaints can also be ignored as we don't pay the French licence fee. Despite its name France Inter is a domestic service.

And also the cricket fans. They have a legitimate reason to want 198 kept on the air.

I wonder if reducing the hours might be a first step to 198 shutdown. Potentially you could switch off after the Archers

Simple solution to that, buy one of these and feed it with whatever floats your boat to keep those valves glowing

The problem is that you get better reliability when equipment runs continuously, TV reliability improved when it went 24 hour.

Of course the Cricket is broadcast on 5 Live Sports Extra. Why should the BBC pay £millions to maintain a service for a few thousand people who refuse to listen via another platform?

Yes but who cares about the reliability now. People here have said that actually they have several valves left which would last many years. So they lose a couple of years off that due to switching on & off, but save £millions in the process. They only have to make it to the end of the electricity switching contract.
