I wonder if any time references etc will be able to operate with the transmitter power reduced now that there is no interference from modulation?

Great example of the Luxembourg effect if you listen on the Twente receiver at the moment. The 163 carrier is being modulated in the ionosphere by a mix of RTL and Europe 1.
The unintended consequences of leaving a carrier wave switched on! |

Silence
Nice clear carrier here in SW UK probably even better than Radio4,shame there's no audio. Perhaps one day, this reminds me of the Worldspace satellite radio platform a few carriers but no stations.

The unintended consequences of leaving a carrier wave switched on! I wonder if one of the two surviving LW stations in France (broadcasting, of course, via sites in Luxembourg and Germany) will take the opportunity to move to 162? It's unlikely, because both Europe 1 and RTL are likely on their way out too, but you never know. Leaving the high-power carrier turned on seems particularly odd. If someone in the French government is paying the power bill, wouldn't it make sense to continue to use the transmitter to carry a French public broadcaster? |

France Inter isn't the direct equivalent of Radio 4 though. I would say it was closer to RTE radio 1.

"The National Frequency Agency (ANFR) was commissioned by the Government to maintain the broadcast of the hourly signal after France Inter longwave closes down at the end of December. This service is widely used in key sectors of the French industry to synchronize more than 200,000 clocks. Since 1977, the frequency of France Inter also transmits a reference time signal elaborated from atomic clocks. This signal is inaudible but, when it is picked up by an appropriate apparatus, it provides French legal time. Some public service undertakings, such as SNCF, Enedis or Aéroports de Paris, but also local authorities, use this signal to synchronize clocks in public places, information panels, Public lighting or the synchronization of pay and display machines. This radio-synchronization service on the 162 kHz frequency provides a time reference of very high accuracy and reliability. It has the advantage of being better received in indoor spaces than other time bases, such as GPS or mobile phone networks. The Government wished to maintain the broadcasting of these hourly signals after the termination of France Inter's programs. In this context, it has tasked the National Frequency Agency (ANFR) to organize the maintenance of this broadcast as from 1 January 2017. ANFR, in close collaboration with TDF, the CFHM (French Chamber of Watchmaking and Microtechnology), and the main users of the signal, will carry out tests from the beginning of 2017 to adjust the parameters for broadcasting the time signal." You don't need such high power to transmit a time signal to France. |

Suggestion of the 'parameter adjustment': Send an Engineer down to the southern tip of Corsica, then turn the wick down on Allouis until the time receiver in Corsica just about works.
