R2 breakfast host younger than R1
Rest of this week the R2 breakfast presenter, Sara Cox is younger than the R1 presenter, Scott Mills.
Why was Sara deemed too old for R1 but not Scott. Seems a bit sexist, women with kids can't relate to youngsters yet a man without them can. Not sure what Sara did wrong to get axed from R1 she never sounded old and related well to her young audience. Scott seemed on his way out when demoted from drive 5 years ago but has clung on and has by far the longest reign of hosting R1 breakfast as a stand in, 18 years! Not many R2 presenters have managed that long presenting the same show. |

Won't Sara Cox get more listeners on R2 than on R1?

Scott should start covering shows like Steve Wright and Ken Bruce at BBC Radio 2 and start to make the transition to the station. Sara Cox did this to make her transition hosting Sunday Mid Mornings on BBC Radio 1 and covering Alex Lester and Janice Long on BBC Radio 2. Sara even covered for Ken Bruce over the Christnas period. |

Sara Cox has a voice for Silent Movies not Radio. ....professional Northern I call it. I avoided Radio 1 because of her. Now Radio 2 is off limits. I am from the same region as her, thankfully my neighbours don't talk like she does....

I actually find her bearable on Radio 2. |

Her voice grates on me whatever the station. When she comes on its time to switch off. Perish the thought that one day Grimshaw might move to Radio 2.

I knew before opening this thread it had to be started by you. What is this obsession you have about presenter's ages ?
Any other reason Scott was replaced by Greg on drive other than age? |

Age is relevant as both Radio 1 & 2 specify an age range in their charters, plus most Radio 1 presenters leave due to their age (Moyles, Whiley, Cox, Bowman etc.). Scott is a rare exception of a mainstream R1 presenter still on well into his 40s.
Any other reason Scott was replaced by Greg on drive other than age? To use age ( along with race and gender) as criteria for employment is actually illegal. Welcome to 2016 |

There is no doubt that in the old days R1 was male dominated and there were no female presenters in their original 1967 line up. But in 2016 the BBC is one of the most politically correct institutions in the world. Chris Moyles was dumped from R1 at age 38. Cox left at amost the same age (39). Let's not forget too that Radio 1's longest serving presenter is a 76 year old women! |

Ken Bruce was younger than many of his R1 counterparts back in the 80s. It doesn't matter what age you are as long as you can do the job required of you.

You're misunderstanding it. Radio 1 are interested in presenters who appeal to listeners aged 15-29. The age of the presenters themselves is irrelevent. Of course, there is likely to be some kind of correlation between the age of a presenter and the age of the listener that they appeal to but correlations are not perfect and there are always outliers. Arguing that all R1 presenters should be youngsters is a bit like arguing that all shows on Cbeebies should be presented by toddlers. I think Mills does deserve to continue on the station for the time being. He has been very savy in reinventing himself over the years and keeping his show fresh and he was very shrewd in brining Chris Stark on board which has helped to skew the show towards a younger audience. Cox made no similar efforts to keep her R1 show relevent to the younger audience.

It maybe 2016 but at R1 once you hit your late 30s you're either sacked or demoted like Scott, Anne N and Pete Tong. If Scott is so relevant why was he demoted is it because Greg is better at relating to a younger audience or because he's much younger than Scott? |

At the time I thought the move was partly to help Scott stay on R1 longer and also that Drive might be having more corporate features taking up the show so Scott could have 3 hours of his features.
As posted before time again I belive future Breakfast show presenters are delibrately kept from covering Breakfast for 2 reasons. 1. It stops a cover presenter being unfairly tarnished if a spell covering goes wrong i.e. someone elses features and 2. It gives the message that there is noone better to do breakfast than the cover presenter. This is why Grimmy didnt cover Moyles, Chris didnt cover for Sara etc. |

The fact that their eldest presenter is shoved to a weekly graveyard slot is ageism, when she was younger she had the 7pm Sunday slot.

If Scott is so relevant why was he demoted is it because Greg is better at relating to a younger audience or because he's much younger than Scott? Since when was Tong demoted? He's very much still the top dog at R1 as far as dance is concerned. He is very lucky to have 5 hours of weekly airtime despite not even living in this country! If moving from 6pm to 10pm is a demotion then the most likely reason would be that R1 would prefer to have a live show in that earlier time slot since Tong's show is pre-recorded in the USA. |
