Last few years, people have whined that the Christmas episode is always too depressing, or features deaths or sad stuff

This year, people are whining that it was too happy and featured no deaths.

What do people actually want?

Or, different people want different things. The fan-base isn't a homogeneous hivemind.

How about a well balanced mixture of the two? Seems logical to me.

A mixture is good enough. As long as the show doesn't stay this way then I will be fine. I would prefer it to be more like Hollyoaks though.

EastEnders should never be anything like Hollyoaks, Birkwood tried that when he was in charge and it alienated a large number of viewers. In fact no soap should suffer the fate of being like Hollyoaks.
