Given the nature of the comments should this be headline news - no. Is it casual homophobic rhetoric - without a doubt yes. The issue for me is that the Top Gear men know that what they say and do gets massive exposure in the media and they need to stop being stupid, irresponsible man boys and start understanding that there are hundreds of thousands of stupid irresponsible man boys out there that take there lead from them about what is an acceptable opinion to voice. To suggest that eating an ice cream is not a heterosexual thing to do is just casual, cheap humour that took them 2 minutes and no discernible talent to think up but just plays to the prejudice of some viewers who think it is ok to take the piss out of gay people. Just pisses me off that these guys are held in such high esteem by some people.

Seems to be another of these "fury" and "outrage" stories which end up being nothing more than a few tweets from the eternally offended.

I miss the old days when they were termed the "green ink brigade" and treated accordingly.
I'm sure Mary Whitehouse would have loved Twitter.

It doesn't offend me, but then it doesn't really make much sense. But he hasn't made much sense since that crash really so..

What a radical concept. That's Hammond sorted, now to deal with third world poverty, we still have a few hours before lunch.

Oh come on. The word 'gay' has been used by kids as an insult BECAUSE it refers to homosexuality. To try and argue that it has somehow changed its meaning to only refer to something lame without any allusion to the thing it is attacking is silly. I don't care though. People are homophobic, you just get used to it, no point in trying to change humans, when they get a gay son or daughter then they can really think about it.

Thats the problem though isn't it. You have these people who think it's ok to be prejudice because they are not on the receiving end of it. Then if they do have a gay child they may have a revelation that they are ok with it. Problem is the rest of the idiots in the world such as Hammond are still going around saying hurtful things and discriminating.

Richard Hammond is the one who looks an arsehole, not the gay men in this country. He's a turkey.

What a sad post - get a life.

There's hundreds of words you can use to describe something as an insult. You don't need to use the word "gay". It's that simple.”

Yea it keeps me awake at night with the worry.

Who needs to think about world famine, wars, pollution, animal extinctions etc. when we have got more serious things to worry about nearer home

Course it is. All that turning the other cheek achieves is getting that one slapped as well.

I think most people have. I'd forgotten Amazon made a new one. I can't say I've missed the weekly dose of 'omg what they said' Twitter outrage posing as news, now it's like they never went away. Sometimes I wish what happens on Twitter stayed on Twitter and didn't become news!

Its a joke. A silly one but to go over the top is ridiculous.

Love all the offended on here. Where have you been in the last 14 years when Top Gear was on? They've said far worse then a stupid joke about ice cream.

That is a problem with all of this. It is not so much the offence takers but the celebs and company's that pander to these morons. Play-Asia and protein world had the best responses to these type of people.

What's with the overreaction it was a joke. I know someone who is gay he wasn't the least bit offended and is tired of snowflakes being offended on his behalf.
People need to grow up and get a sense of humour

This comment says it all. You are one of those right wing moaners 'Why bother about minorities when there are bigger things to care about' ? well it is worth worrying about, along with those bigger things you mentioned. This country is getting more conservative, and it's shocking how selfish and ignorant people are.

Yes that is right folks, we should not care about the small stuff. racism, homophobia, sexism, people with disabilities, I mean they don't matter do they?? They aren't the 'majority'

Please don't mock the disabled, it's very offensive

Absolutely - the worms are turning so suck it up. Your response is classic 'first world'.

That pathetic insult and 'butthurt' have already been used on this thread, perhaps you could try a new one...
