Errrr . . No!!

Do you remember ice cream vans in the last half of the 20th century?

Did they have signs on saying 'Children woman & gays only'?

The sad thing is that there will now be a certain type of straight man who will now be scared to ever eat ice cream again.”

Isn't he using 'it's gay' as an insult?

in the 80s rival football hooligans used to call West Hams firm the ICF, the Ice cream firm, so Hammond is showing the mentality of a very old fashioned football yob

He's not. However his comments have received a huge amount of attention and have to some extent created a link in the public consciousness between eating ice cream and being a gay man.

sounds like there might be a gap in the market, I am going to rent a basement in Soho where straight men can come and eat lemon sorbet without shame

Maybe he is but you know what, as a gay man I couldn't care less. Eating ice cream is a great thing and if insecure straight men want to deny themselves that pleasure and limit the number of enjoyable things they are allowed to partake in then so be it. If it was meant to be homophobic then it has backfired.

Presumably the viewing figures aren't up to scratch and they needed to get some free publicity. PR stunt.

Hahaha

Can I come - I'm not male but I do love lemon sorbet.

I've got short hair and I'll act butch, if that helps

The only link he's created is to his stupidity.

everyone knows Magnum ice-creams are gay because of Magnum P.I.

To me, he has proven for once and all, that he has been and always will be a Neanderthal in his views. The man has been and will always be an idiot. I gather May called him a T**T - he is right...he is a 'tw*t

I haven't looked at the clip or anything, but... judging from what I've seen of him and the Top Gear lads, this sounds more like a tongue-in-cheek joke against straight men. Is that possible?

He does say 'give it to me' more than once. Nice double entendre there that I probably missed when I was 5.

I don't think Hammond is known for his subtle irony

He was very clearly implying that some ice creams resemble a phallus and this eating one might look like you were giving a blow job.

It's typical top gear 'laddish' humour. I'm not sure what more people expect. It wasn't a great joke but it was completely typical of the three and utterly unoffensive.

None of the ice creams I've eaten have resembled a phallus. I've obviously been going to the wrong ice cream vans.

Really Not 'laddish' but childish in that case - and definitely not funny, offensive or not.
