PRIDE - Interesting editing
Pride on BBC 2 last night was very oddly edited.
The entire HIV storyline of the main character was erased - It was like they wanted to turn it into a "nice" film so lost the "nasty" story which is a shame as the story was very subtle and well done. without it the behaviour of Mark Ashton loos odd and erratic and out of character. It's like taking he miners strike out of Billy Elliot - poor move on the part of the BBC. |

I thought the BBC always maintained they rarely if ever edited films for transmission apart for extreme situations ? Sounds very odd.

Could it be that they didn't want to restigmatise HIV as it is no longer an 80's death sentence, reinforcing a false assumption? It does seem a little odd.

That sounds like a very odd decision.

Ive recorded this but I don't think I'll bother if it is heavily cut. I'll get the DVD instead.

OP - are you sure you are correct on this? I struggle to see why BBC2 would edit this out. I think BBC2 very rarely edits movies these days.

Does more than one cut exist of the film? It would make no sense for the BBC to remove an entire storyline from a post watershed showing of one of their own productions.

It would make no sense for the BBC to edit it themselves, and it certainly wouldn't be cost effective.

I saw this on Sky a year or so back when it premiered but from my recollection, was there even a significant HIV storyline for the Mark Ashton character? I'm sure the only real hint was the sequence where he ran into Russell Tovey's character in the club and it seemed to hint towards it but other than that, I can't remember there being any 'nasty' subject matter in the film... would have to see it again to make sure though.

The version on iPlayer is 111 minutes compared to 115 mins on the DVD, so any cuts were only small.

The character played by Dominic West does have HIV, in fact was one of the first in the UK to be diagnosed. That is mentioned towards the end of the film, and that wasn't cut. There is also the mention at the end of the film that Mark Ashton died shortly after being diagnosed with HIV. It would be interesting if the OP could explain which sections were cut. I only saw the last 20 minutes when it was shown the other night. |

Isn't that just the 24 to 25 fps conversion? You can always take 4% off an original length for a UK TV airing.

End credits
When films are screened on television, the end credits are often 'sped up' or cut, which could explain the shorter running yime.

No unless the DVD was an import it would be at 25fps. According to wikipedia the official running time is 120 mins at 24fps, (IMDb says 119), which is 115 mins at 25fps which means that the DVD version is uncut. My Freeview recording, like iPlayer, is 111 mins so 3 or 4mins are missing. What those 3 or 4mins are I have no idea as I don't own the DVD.
Often TV showings have heavily truncated final credits, perhaps that would account for a few minutes? |

Fairly certain the credits were cut. From when the screen went black to the end of the credits was 2m 5s, if would have been a lot longer than that originally.

Either they saw a pre-theatrical release screening or I think the OP has imagined their own director's cut...

It wasn't cut as far as I can tell at all. And the credits on the BBC one are only 2 minutes long. There is only one version (not counting AD).
Come on OP, what was cut? |
