I haven't seen the Daily Mail for days but it is disgraceful.
Going on about drugs and booze, showing pictures of him looking terrible, of his partner in socks and sandals, all to just basically take the mick. |

There is no such thing as the media, and the public who eat up all the fodder they provide, respecting a person's right to privacy or a private life. |

Many rock and pop stars hit the skids and die young because they hammer the wild living, with copious amounts of drugs, booze, parties, lots of sexual partners etc
It goes with the territory. No point trying to pretend it wasn't their lifestyle that eventually screwed many of them up, even to the point of many dying because of it. Think GM would say he believed in recreational drug use, for the most, until it totally got his hooks in him. There's no doubt it shortened his career too BUT if given the choice of what he would have viewed as a dreary long life vs a briefer hedonistic one, maybe he'd still have chosen the latter. OTOH it's a real shame that he needed weed in order to write and that became a complete bind despite, he felt, it helping him to make better music. He was a complicated man, that's why he's more interesting than the Daily Mails Z listers as mentioned by another poster on this page. ( They're best left in the DM or the many, many DS threads created for them. This slender distinction between the DM and DS does |

The article I think the OP refers to, is here
I know the Mail are no saints, but that article is only reflecting facts. ...and yes, he did look unrecognisable with all that weight. ![]() He drank, had indulged drugs, was overweight and obviously not particularly fit. All can contribute to heart failure so whats the problem? I would have thought people to be more upset over the fact of his relative young age than a paper stating the blindingly obvious about drugs/drink/weight. |

Things haven't improved in this respect since Marilyn Monroe's death in the 1960s:
"All the papers had to say was that Marilyn was found in the nude" [Candle in the Wind] These amazing people who entertain us all - how the press love to hound them, even after death. |

Whilst I agree that this is what they do when people die, bring up all their failings and faults
Other parts of the media make the deceased look like they were saints. Every famous person who dies seem to be the cleverest, funniest, kindest down to earth person anyone would wish to meet. It's both ends of the scale exaggerated. I don't think it's disrespectful if adds to the 'story' but I do think they could wait a couple of days before dragging someone through the mud or making them sound like Mother Theresa II. |

The. Mail have only reported what has been in the public domain for years. Although they have well publicised George's generosity which is something I didn't know until I read it so they printed good and bad aspects of his life. So what that is what newspapers do.
If what was published about GM ' s life was untrue or exaggerated then be up in arms about it but that is not the case. |

Yes, agree with you but must say
No different than Sky's coverage, nor the Daily Mirror. Telegraph were babbling on about heroin soon after. Presume same stories in Times but haven't looked. And no different than the majority of the comments on DSpy on the main thread yesterday. (Guardian was better - it actually focused on his achievements.) George was an immensely talented man, who happened to be homosexual. It will be really refreshing the day that The Guardian value and praise people for their talents rather than their ability to belong to a minority group that one of their journalists can turn into a "victim" article. |

This could have gone in the big George Michael thread but nevermind, he did abuse drugs and alcohol while he had serious health problems. It's not a surprise he died too young. What do you expect the newspapers to do, lie?

In the main the Guardian was better but The Guardian had a dreadful article by Owen Jones who seems to think that George's greatest characteristic was his homosexuality.

It's sad that he can't have a private meal in a restaurant without being papped... obviously oblivious to the camera in that last photo published in the tabloids...
